and don't like english bread- will this do them any harm? are they edible? I caught one but it looked so cute I put it back, couldn't bear to eat it. What happens if they keep on breeding?

common carp
is the forerunner of our present day Koi. Koi are not big goldfish. The goldfish is a distant cousin to Koi.
There are several types of pellets and sticks available. Search Drs Foster and Smith they have several varities and sizes of pellets.
If you are feeding them just bread they are not getting the nutrients they need for health and good growth.
I have a Koi pond I use tetra floating sticks
I also use wheat germ (for colder weather)
growth food and color enhancers.
If you are feeding a lot of carp go to your nearest feed store and buy fish pellets by the larger size bags which will be less expensive .

FOR A REAL TREAT THROW OUT SLICES OF RUBYRED GRAPEFRUIT AND SLICED ORANGES the little buggers just suck the insides out and leave the rind it's a real treat for them. They also like the darkest leaves of romaine lettuce.

The best thing to feed your carp is a high-quality koi pellet. Koi are basically carp, bred for color and pattern. However, you can also feed them commercial trout chow or catfood chow (like from Purina), plus all kinds of treats as carp are essentially omnivores. In addition to the bread, try things like frozen peas, slices of orange, chunks of watermelon, fresh or forzen brine shrimp, blood worms, chopped up earth worms, Cheerios, etc., etc. Just no "land-based" animal proteins (like beef or pork), no animal fats, and nothing with artificial sugars, colors, etc.
It will not do them any harm to eat bread - French, English, or otherwise, as long as it doesn't have butter or something on it! Because of the low protein content, however, it's probably not doing them much good other than getting them full - to get them to grow bigger, you want to up the protein content. But bread is just fine for them.
You "can" eat them, but whether or not they taste good enough to be worth it depends on what they are fed and how cold the water is. If the water is very cold and they are corn fed, they are actually very tasty. The warmer your water is, and the more time they spend foraging in the mud, the mushier and nastier-tasting they are.
If they keep on breeding, they will eventually reach a point where the parameters of the pond can not sustain the population. Then they will start dying off. Once their population has been sufficiently reduced, the pond will become more hospitable again and their population will begin to increase again. Over time, you are likely to see this rise and fall over and over and over again....

Carp keep it clean. You can feed them koi pellets, or any clean human food like veggies or bread, nothing spiced or sweetened. You can't eat carp unless you have a pressure cooker and they really aren't that good. They are oportunistic omnivours that frequently feed on the bottom. They spawn in spring same time as the black bass, scattering their eggs in weed mats. Many will eat their own eggs and babies if they can find them. Their numbers will stabilize. Toss in a small inexpensive koi into the bunch and watch them grow. They are related fish and can breed together, but you will get all the drab colored ones since that is the dominant gene. Only koi on koi will get you the nice colors.

We have grass carp in our pond the help keep the pond cleaner, I am suprised your carp likes french bread and I would not think it would harm it.

bread dose not harm carp you could feed them with maggots feeders casters blood worm you can get them all from your local fishing tackle shop they also like sweet corn and peas

fish will eat any bread you can also give them egg yokes or even chap pie dog food but if they do breed you Will have to remove thee eggs straight away or they will eat them
