What's the one tourist attraction you'd recommend to a first-timer to Japan?

The one attraction I'd recommend is Tsukiji Market. You feel the vibe of the city and get a tangible feeling of the origins of Tokyo itself. Seafood of all forms present there, and most impressive are the huge tunas being hauled around. You can have the greatest sushi or sashimi you've ever had in your life, as fresh as humanly possible, in one of the nearby restaurants. There are many stalls where you can buy souvenir items, some of the kitchen knives Japan is famous for, and of course, food.

If you could only visit one attraction in Tokyo, I'd definitely recommend Tsukiji Market.

The Imperial Palace or Meiji Shrine.

These things are distinctly Japanese. You must see the culture if you go there!
