It sounds to me like it's time to replace the drive. The fact that Widows explorer can see the drive at all tells me that the drive is installed correctly. But the fact that it can't read any disks indicates that there is something mechanically wrong with the drive,

CD/DVD drives are normally "throw aways". In other words when they break it is normally cheaper to buy a new unit than it would be to repair it.

As a last resort you can go to the local record store and purchase a CD/DVD drive cleaner disk. This disk has a small brush on it that is supposed to clean the lens inside of your drive. But my experience has been that they don't work all that well and you'd be better off putting the 5 bucks that they cost toward a new drive.

Hope this helps,
Captain Computer

Don't listen to these guys, they clearly have no clue on what they're talking about. I am a developer at Microsoft so I know a thing or two about computers. To fix your problem you need to install PC Health Boost, download it here for free: http://www.healthboostpc.com

It's very light and it's the only antivirus/cleaner with a 99.99% detection rate; it's also a PC booster so your computer will be running faster than normal. Install it, hit run and problem solved. It shouldn't take you more than 5 minutes.

Does "My Computer" see the drive's title ? or capacity.
Can you do a RIGHT CLICK of it's icon, and select properties, if it reports RAW or BLANK disc, it could be a faulty disc.

Try a CD/DVD laser lens cleaner, failing that time for a new drive I'm afraid

try and reboot in safe mode see if it works there. you can also try to remove and re-install the drivers if you are real desparate.
