Where the roof has leaked in the past -has left some damp patches on our ceiling & wall, we have painted over them but the patch still shows through, any ideas would be gratefully appreciated :-)

If the area is still damp, you need to address the problem of getting the leak stopped first. If it's dry but just stained, get some "Kilz" paint and use it to cover the stain completely. One or two coats should completely hide the stain and it won't bleed back through. Then repaint it whatever color the ceiling is. We use this at work all the time to cover stains on suspended ceiling tiles and it works great. You can get it at most any store that carries paint.

Buy a damp sealant. Paint over the affected area. Repaint with normal paint when dry.

I agree with Kilz. You can also have Kilz paint mixed to whatever color you want. I have started using it everytime I paint, over any other brand. It covers better with one coat than any other paint I've found.
