Excess gas is typically caused by non-digestible or excessive sugars and starches in the diet.
If you cannot digest lactose (" lactose intolerant") you would have the same problem.
If you cannot digest certain proteins in wheat, more of the starches would be delivered to the large intestines and result in more gas.
I would suggest a very restricted diet (primarily rice) to begin and keeping a diary of meals and symptoms. If the restricted diet helps, then add back one or two foods until symptoms worsen. This will give your doctor an idea of what is the cause of your problem.
As people get older, we often lose the ability to digest
lactose.

I get that too but perhaps not to the same degree. For me some high fiber foods cause bloating so telling you to eat fiber may be simplistic advice. Starchy foods like bread, bakery goods and pasta make me bloated. Breakfast cerials bloat me up like a baloon. Definately sugar. Beans and legumes can do it. Bloating can be caused by swallowing air when you eat. Carbonated beverages of course can cause it.

Consider trying a low carb diet for a few days and see if it helps. Starch and sugar are the worst bloating foods for me.

You should have a stool sample checked for yeast and bacteria. There are "good" bacteria that you should have, and if those are missing, other bacteria can overgrow and cause problems.

You may also want to be checked for food allergies. That is a blood test, and here in the US, it's kind of pricey (a few hundred dollars), but that may be worth it if it finds a culprit.

Good luck in finding out what it is.

I am wondering if a good Chiropractor could help alleviate your symptoms.

The reason is not as important as getting the problem cured. I would recommend that you consult a good homeopath to help you. I would have gladly helped you if you were physically accessible (by residing near).
