When a person gets away from the God, The God starts giving the reward of his good deeds within the world, so the sinner may have no share in the blessings of eternal life of hereafter.
That's why you feel getting better but it is an illusion, as the hereafter is long lasting eternal life with no end, so reward in hereafter is much greater than that in this life.
