Mandarin Chinese has the most first language speakers. Using the same criterion, Spanish and English are the next two; but authorities differ as to which is second and which is third. It may be that Spanish has recently overtaken English because of the large Latin American and Central American Spanish-speaking population combined with the number of USA citizens that speak Spanish as a first language.
