Certainly, neither bin Laden nor his principal associate, Ayman al-Zawahiri, are graduates of Islamic universities or seminaries. And so their proclamations ignore 14 centuries of Muslim scholarship, and instead take the form of lists of anti-American grievances and of Koranic quotations referring to early Muslim wars against Arab idolators. These are followed by the conclusion that all Americans, civilian and military, are to be wiped off the face of the Earth.

All this amounts to an odd and extreme violation of the normal methods of Islamic scholarship. Had the authors of such fatwas [non-binding legal opinions] followed the norms of their religion, they would have had to acknowledge that no school of traditional Islam allows the targeting of civilians. An insurrectionist who kills non-combatants is guilty of baghy, "armed transgression", a capital offence in Islamic law. A jihad can be proclaimed only by a properly constituted state; anything else is pure vigilantism.

unless you look at the fact that to Islam (the real version) only muslims are civilians, thus all non-muslims, even children, are soldiers, and 'can' be killed as such. not to mention that the koran specifically calls for the death/ subjugation of all un-believers, from Jews to Hindus to arab pagans.

also, the various conquests of Jerusalem and western Europe and southern Spain all show an overwhelming consensus that it is 'normal' to attack and subjugate these non-believers even if they have been non-aggressive to muslims.

and im sure, that you being a 'proud muslimah', know the 3 part jihad; convert, pay, or die.

osama bin laden is merely following what dozens of previous muslim warlords have been doing for the past 1000+ years.

Even if they are graduate of muslim universities or are muslims, firstly it doesnt seem their action, secondly if they have really done what is relation of this action with Islam. Afew days ago an American student killed many of his fellow students just for no reason, we are sure that this was his fault not of christianity or Americans.

Al-Qaeda's ideology, often referred to as "jihadism," is marked by a willingness to kill "apostate" Muslims and an emphasis on jihad. Although it is clearly at odds with nearly all Islamic religious thought, it has its roots in the work of two modern Sunni Islamic thinkers: Mohammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab and Sayyid Qutb.
Al-Wahhab was an 18th-century reformer who claimed that Islam had been corrupted a generation or so after the death of Mohammed. He denounced any theology or customs developed after that as non-Islamic, including more than 1,000 years of religious scholarship. He and his supporters took over what is now Saudi Arabia, where Wahhabism remains the dominant school of religious thought.
Sayyid Qutb, a radical Egyptian scholar of the mid-20th century, declared Western civilization the enemy of Islam, denounced leaders of Muslim nations for not following Islam closely enough, and taught that jihad should be undertaken not just to defend Islam, but to purify it.
1979 Bin Laden graduates from King Abdul Aziz University in Jiddah with a degree in civil engineering
Although al-Qaeda and Usama bin Laden have become virtually synonymous, bin Laden does not run the organization single-handedly. Two of his top advisors are Dr. Ayman al-Zawahiri and Muhammed Atef. Al-Zawahiri is al-Qaeda's theological leader and bin Laden's probable successor. Al-Zawahiri is an Egyptian surgeon from an upper-class family. He joined the country's Islamist movement in the late 1970s. He served three years in prison on charges connected to the assassination of Anwar Sadat, during which time he was tortured. After his release he went to Afghanistan, where he met bin Laden and became his personal physician and advisor. He was likely instrumental in bin Laden's political evolution.
The principal aims of al-Qaeda are to drive Americans and American influence out of all Muslim nations, especially Saudi Arabia; destroy Israel; and topple pro-Western dictatorships around the Middle East. Furthermore, it is bin Laden's goal to unite all Muslims and establish, by force, an Islamic nation adhering to the rule of the first Caliphs.

I hate when people cut and paste answers, like "D & G gifts" up there. Is that a wiki copy?

Are we allowed to use business names and advertise on avatars??

{Proud Muslima: where are your rebuttels?? It's 5 am, and I can help.

what's his name up there, said in Islam no one but muslims are chosen and Quran calls for the death of all no Muslims - WRONG. In Islam, in the Quran, it says "all people of the book will enter the gates of heaven". AND, Allah (God), only speaks of death, when speaking of war. The quran was written it a time of WAR. that's why it gives rules for fighting, doesn't say to FIGHT for no reason, unless non believers are trying to whipe you out (which is happening, ehm).

And, In Judiasm, "God's chosen people are only going to heaven, in Christianity, only christians who are babtised are going to heaven!

Come on girl, refute these liars who think they know your religion.

I think some of them are actually still alive, well BBC News met with one of them so go figure, but anyway their actions were as far away from true islam as can be, I understand why they would be furstrated at the U.S Gov. though, I mean look at them now they're over their killing people in iraq for no reason. So if we are expected to explain why these people did what they did, then I expect all Americans, especially Christians since Bush is one, to explain to me why their Gov. is a bigger Terrorist than everyone else. Bin Laden (not Bush's best buddies the family, but their son) sent over 3 planes, Bush sent more than a 100 thousand to iraq. Who's a bigger Criminal ?

So in order to be a member of Islam one has to be a graduate of an Islamic university or seminary?

I think they're Islamic in the same way that Warren Jeffs and his crew are Mormons. That is, they're disclaimed by the mainstreamers, who some may argue have abandoned the True Faith, but could be seen to representing the purist form of their religion.

I agree they are nutjobs who abuse religion to suit their twisted criminal aims It would be nice if more islamic clerics came out more vocally against this

samething has been done to all religions For instance the psychos who bomb abortion clinics pretending that they are christian. The body count is thankfully lower but is same type of pathology

They are Islamic extremists. It's like when you take a right-wing Christian like Larry Craig. He wants to think he is a straight Christian family man, when in all reality he is a homosexual perv. (Nothing wrong with being homosexual, but this guy didn't want anyone to know about it) These Islamic terrorists lost sight of what their religion taught them as many Christians do about tolerance. You want more proof -- Ann Coulter. Nothing else needs to be said.
