Then will they speak up against what they must feel is the teaching of lies, bigotry, ignorance, and scientific illiteracy to the minds of the young, weak, and/or gullible?
The stifling of young minds who naturally seek HONEST and INFORMED answers to their questions can be no less than child abuse.
I'd ask the same of the Islamic communities in regard to any extremists or fundamentalists within their religion or communities who might equally pose as much of a threat to peace and a respect for nature and the environment, as well as negatively conditioning the young.
Crazy, outlandish, christian fundie groups are no different.
At the very least these fundie fruitcakes give religion a bad name, notably the christian religion and it's many and highly varied offshoots.
Do moderate, informed, scientifically literate, and progressive christians feel duty bound to side with those fundies who claim the same god, and so be happilly tarred with the same brush..?
Thanks

God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Christ would be saved. Jesus came to seek and save them which were lost. The religionists of His day chided Him for eating with prostitutes and tax collectors. Today we have the same religionists who forget that we are not here to condemn, but to be Jesus' hands and feet seeking the lost and winning some. Jesus' true children are the wheat that He planted. The enemy came in and planted tares in the field of the Lord. When young tares grow, at first they look like wheat. When they are full grown then the difference becomes obvious. Jesus won't allow His angels to pull out the tares lest by accident they accidentally pull up a wheat. Yet Jesus says that in the last day, He will send His angels to gather the tares out of His kingdom. Some of those tares have actually become church leaders, I think, though only the Lord knows. Jesus said, come unto me all you who labor and are heavy laden and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me. For I am meek and lowly in heart, and you shall find rest for your souls.

No, I feel no duty whatsoever to stand beside "Christian" fundamentalists. It is a terrible mistake to assume that diverse denominations are somehow connected simply because both have appropriated the term "Christian." There is no more connection between me and the fundamentalist than there is between you and the fundamentalist. In fact, you probably have closer ties to them than I do.
And not only do I have no conncetion with them as far as "standing by them," I don't even have a close enough connection to feel any kind of personal responsibility for opposing them. As far as I am concerned, they are a completely different religion. My God is as distinct from their "God" as mine is from Allah or Zeus. I feel no more responsibility to combat them than I do against Islamic or Hindu fundamentalism.

The belief that God took six days to create the world, versus the belief that he took 13.7 billion years, versus the belief that he took a second are all irrelevant. They are secondary to the consensus among believers that however long he took to do it, GOD CREATED IT.
My personal belief is that if God is powerful enough to create something out of nothing, then his timetable is a matter of minor importance. I also believe that a 13.7 billion year old universe is completely consistent with a literal 6-day creation week, if you read Genesis right.

I'm a traditional, orthodox Roman Catholic and do not believe that the story of the earth's creation in the Bible is literally true. But fundamentalists don't listen to Catholics anyway.

No, they are very vocal.
Many of the people opposed to teaching ID, are christians.
Not all christians are creationists, and they don't sit in a closet and let the creationists bully them either.

groups like this do exist but they don't seem to make much noise:
http://www.asa3.org/
those who do make noise tend to be marginalised, so perhaps this is sensible of them. it seems to me that they are often so darned polite to everyone that the fundies just assume that the moderates have views identical to their own. see for example francis collins, human genome project director and author of 'the language of god'.

Your calculation related to the quantity of water and temp. is incorrect. needless to say, falling water can't be heated to 2700 stages as you declare. once you employ the mind-blowing kinetic capability formula decrease than, you will locate the water temp. could basically upward thrust 7.40 stages C. The relation between kinetic capability and momentum is greater complicated subsequently, and is given by ability of the equation: E_k = sqrt{p^2 c^2 + m^2 c^4} - m c^2. this could additionally be bigger as a Taylor series, the 1st term of that's the easy expression from Newtonian mechanics. What this shows is that the formula for capability and momentum are actually not particular and axiomatic, yet extremely recommendations which emerge from the equation of mass with capability and the concepts of relativity.
