hi there it really depends on how much chocolate the dog ate meaning one or two biscuts I would consider ok on the other hand one or two chocolate bars vet asap as I own a small Pom and she loves Nutella and I give in but always watch her afterwards
We've all heard it, "Don't give your dog chocolate it will kill him". We'll how true is it you're probably wondering. Do I have to rush him to an emergency vet if he ate one of my M&M's?
The truth is chocolate contains theobromine that is toxic to dogs in sufficient quantities. This is a xanthine compound in the same family of caffeine, and theophylline.
Toxic Levels
The good news is that it takes, on average, a fairly large amount of theobromine 100-150 mg/kg to cause a toxic reaction. Although there are variables to consider like the individual sensitivity, animal size and chocolate concentration.
On average,
Milk chocolate contains 44 mg of theobromine per oz.
Semisweet chocolate contains 150mg/oz.
Baker's chocolate 390mg/oz.
Using a dose of 100 mg/kg as the toxic dose it comes out roughly as:
1 ounce per 1 pound of body weight for Milk chocolate
1 ounce per 3 pounds of body weight for Semisweet chocolate
1 ounce per 9 pounds of body weight for Baker's chocolate.
So, for example, 2 oz. of Baker's chocolate can cause great risk to an 15 lb. dog. Yet, 2 oz. of Milk chocolate usually will only cause digestive problems.
Clinical Signs
Xanthines affect the nervous system, cardiovascular system and peripheral nerves. It has a diuretic effect as well. Clinical signs:
Hyper excitability
Hyper irritability
Increased heart rate
Restlessness
Increased urination
Muscle tremors
Vomiting
Diarrhea
Treatment
There is no specific antidote for this poisoning. And the half life of the toxin is 17.5 hours in dogs. Induce vomiting in the first 1-2 hours if the quantity is unknown. Administering activated charcoal may inhibit absorption of the toxin. An anticonvulsant might be indicated if neurological signs are present and needs to be controlled. Oxygen therapy, intravenous medications, and fluids might be needed to protect the heart.
Milk chocolate will often cause diarrhea 12-24 hours after ingestion. This should be treated symptomatically (fluids, etc..) to prevent dehydration.
If you suspect your pet has ingested chocolate contact your Vet immediately! They can help you determine the the proper treatment for your pet.

It is true that chocolate isn't good for dogs, but some dogs
tolerate it better than others. If your dog is OK, not vomiting
or having diarrhea, just keep an eye on her. If she starts to
have these symptoms, then rush her to an emergency vet,but if she is just snoozing and sleeping it off, don't panic. My sister's
dog ate a huge bar of chocolate and had no bad results,
another friend's dog ate a few candies and was spewing
vomit all over the house. So just use your good sense
and see what your little girl is doing--plus this is a good
time to figure out how she got the brownie, and make sure
that she doesn't have a chance to do it again, whether its time for some serious obedience training so she knows that
she can't steal food off tables or keeping an eye on yourself
so you don't leave food in places she can reach it (like on
the floor in front of the TV.)

Take your dog to the vet as soon as possible. Chocolate is poisonous to dogs and since your dog is small, the brownies could cause some serious harm. If you can't get the dog to the vet right away, is there any way you can induce vomiting? That would be better than waiting until the morning to take the dog to the vet.

it depends on how much she ate. chocolate can be toxic to a dog, and the more expensive the chocolate the more toxic.
you really need to induce vomiting, this can be done by giving the dog, hydrogen peroxide, mixed with a little salt.
put the mixture into a syringe, and do it outside, this works immediately, she needs to vomit before she digests it do it now. she will vomit the chocolate up.
I know this because my pup got hold of part of an Easter bunny! she is alright , my vet told me to do this..

If your dog ate chocolate you need to call the emergency vet to see if she ate enough to cause a problem. If it was enough to hurt her you need to get her to the vet quickly.
