I ran into this old lady at the grocery store with my shopping cart today because her and this other old lady were blocking the aisle. They both saw me yet refused to move so I casually bumper her heel with the cart and said I'm sorry.

People say things without being sincere constantly. The situation you mentioned with the woman and the shopping cart doesn't really matter. You will probably never see the woman again and she didn't get hurt or anything and you still got to buy your food, forget about it. But I would say you have to say that you are sorry whenever you need to for whatever mistakes you make, use your judgment. The important thing is to know when you are not at fault and you do not need to apologize. If you say that you're sorry when the other person was the one who stepped out of line then more than likely that person will view your kindness for weakness and vulnerability. Once someone views you as someone who can be pushed around they usually will take it to the limit to abuse you and benefit from your lack of being firm. People as a species have the potential for being extremely wicked beings even though we all know the difference between right and wrong. As far as meaning you are sorry when you say you are sorry to someone, I think that if you know you were the one who made the mistake then you should know well enough that you should be sorry in your own mind when you apologize to the other person.

Well, let me tell you I have fist hand experience in this as a child. When I went shopping to the grocery store with my grandmother I thought we would never leave. My grandmother knows so many ppl, she would chat with all the Lady's. They did not care if they were blocking a section of the isle. They just kept talking and sometimes move if someone would say excuse me. I know and feel your pain, but at the same time you should use your words and not your actions. Good Luck
And it would be probably be best if you don't shop between the hours of 8am and 12 noon, this is when all the moms and grandmas like to shop. Good Luck.

Well, you would of thought that the ladies being the age that they are, they would of had a little bit of old fashion courteous left and moved the heck over so you could get by,but nope,not in this day and age, even the elderly can be just as ignorant as a teenager sometimes. I think I would of done the same thing except I would of said, "Thank you", after she got the bumping cart hint to move over. Anyways,I believe she got what she gave in this situation,she didn't want to move when she saw you coming to begin with so her intentions were clear,as so where your intentions when you claimed to be sorry.

~~~ News Flash Buddy!! You really are sorry for your actions. Why else would you still be thinking about it, and asking us if you were wrong to apologize? You're probably feeling bad because the old lady may have fallen or bruised. Next time think before letting your impatience with others cause you to do something you may regret later on. Everybody makes mistakes, so it ain't the end of the world. Just remember....it's never too late for a positive change. Try something "Nicer" next time. Everybody benefits. ~~~
well, she shouldn't have done that, but you should be sorry to everyone, even to grouchy old Lady's. you could say 'excuse me' and if they refuse to move find a different way around them. some times old Lady's are unable to move out of the way, or can't push their cart in that direction. try to put yourself in their position. but they were wrong by not saying anything or showing any signs that she had a reason.
I've done the same thing except I put my cart almost right up to her butt and gave it a tiny push with my back turned. I knew it was wrong when I did it. Will I be punished?
What's wrong with me?
LOL, some rude people need a bump now and then. Another that works is to stare right at them and give them a loud, "Excuse me, you're NOT the only person on the planet!"
You were rude to do that, you should have gone around them or asked them to move. If she was old, you could have really hurt her.
