Dale Jr isn't getting the 83, the 83 is driven by Brian Vickers in the Red Bull Toyota. Red Bull choose the 83 at the beginning of the the year because the volume of a Red Bull energy drink is 8.3 oz.
I don't know why Dale Jr is being so bullheaded about his number and not just take the 5 if it about honoring his Grandfather from the outset. Ralph drove the 5 for one race in 1971 at the Dixie 400 Grand National race at Atlanta Motor Speedway. He finished 35th out of 42 cars after a transmission failure.
That being said Hendrick Motorsports has applied to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for possible use of five numbers by Earnhardt next season: 38, 51, 58, 81 and 82.

NO !!! not the number 25, he said today on PTI that people with the number 8 tattoo will only have to make alterations to the tattoo , so his number will have an 8 in it. I read somewhere Hendricks leased a couple numbers i think a couple were 81 and 83 so look for those to be his number. He did say that in 2 weeks his new sponser and he will have a press conference to announce his number and sponser.

Im particular Hendrick might like it, however the 25 motor vehicle has traditionally, when you consider that Tim Richmond's dying, been rather lots the finished season R&D motor vehicle for the team. purely ask Ken Schrader, Jerry Nadeau, Joe Nemechek, Ricky Craven, Wally Dallenbach, Brian Vickers (particularly), in spite of the undeniable fact that, with a driving force like Dale Jr, Hendrick might get killed by the followers if he positioned Jr. in what's rather lots what I stated, a R&D motor vehicle. Joe Gibbs, and Richard Childress are good opportunities, as the two communities have room for a million extra motor vehicle under NASCAR regulations, and whether Gibbs did no longer choose for to amplify to a 4th motor vehicle, Yeley might have yet another undesirable 365 days returned, Gibbs can kick him out, and furnish Dale Jr. the 18. RCR's 3 drivers are rather safeguard, so for RCR, it could be enlargement to a 4th motor vehicle. till a curveball is thrown, I belive the suitable 3 communities are Joe Gibbs, Richard Childress, and Jr making his Busch team a Cup team, which, whether he had help from the two RCR, JGR, or Hendrick, i think of could be a significant mistake (as obvious from Brett and Geoff Bodine, invoice Elliott, Ricky Rudd, and recently, Michael Waltrip), for my section, if Jr ran his own team for Cup.

Jr will not be in the #83, nor the #38.
