In the middle ages, before anyone knew what the hell they were talking about, they beleived the heart controlled everything you do, because if you remove the heart you're dead. Now we know the brain does, so shouldn't everyone be saying "I know in my brain...." or "My brain is telling me..." or "I love you with all my brain?" Love? It's caused by chemical reactions in the brain. You develop an affinity for one person over everyone else. Nothing special going on in your blood pump.

interesting.
but, you know, that when we have most emotions, the heart is directly affected.
Great grief or anguish? We feel it in the chest/the heart.
Love? Ever been head over heals? Did you not feel it in your heart? (chest?)
What about anger? What happens here? also in the heart.
Sure we know the brain is where the thoughts occur, yet virtually every thought and emotion directly affects the heart.

You should note that, in ancient texts like the Bible, when it refers to the heart, it is in the figurative poetic sense.
What does this mean? It means, that it really was not a scientific commentary on the origins of thought, things were worded so that people could understand in their vernacular.
The heart (or chest) as previously noted, is where we literally feel, our strongest emotions, so to say the heart, as an organ of thought is, as I mentioned before, the poetic way of relating in the most simplest of terms, and understandable reference to our emotions.

Now to mention one of my 'pet peeves' of modern day references.
Many times, on TV shows (the news, talk shows), you will hear people ask others, "What do you feel?" (as in what is your opinion).
The problem I have is similar to what you question raised, that being, people do not literally 'feel' to have an opinion. They THINK. Feelings are an emotion, not an intelligent thought.
So, the question should really be "What do you THINK?"
and the answer should always be "I think..."
Am I wrong?

Yes. When you read ancient writings that talk about the "heart," you can freely insert the word "brain" or (more accurately) "mind."

However, you should keep in mind that the ancient Greeks (who were not stupid) used the word "heart" to describe the dynamis of the rational mind, as opposed to the "nous," which represented the energeia of perception, or the "dianoia," which represented the energeia of rational thought. In other words, it isn't quite so simple as just not knowing "what the hell they were talking about."

But it is absolutely ridiculous to think that the word "heart" in ancient writings meant "emotions."

Heart, in this case doesn't mean the literal heart. It's more like: With all sincerity, from all that is me, my greatest desire, with all truth. I could go on but I guess you get the idea.

I guess, but I sure feel like I'm in love. The heart is more like the wellspring of life, anyway.

But thank you for this.

there's more to the person than the physical body, and the heart center is still believed to be the center of emotions by many faiths. usually, when people believe something in their heart, they mean they feel it emotionally.
