I've had my two cats for 4.5 (female) and 5 (male)years. Both were purchased from the human society and both were spayed/neutered when I purchased them. They occasionally play outside when we are with, but one night my female cat escaped us and was out for 2-3 hours w/out us. Tonight we noticed her nipples are looking enlarged. To me, they just look kind of large, to my husband he says he thinks they looks a little pink. How pink should they be? Is it possible she's pregnant even though she was supposed to have been spayed? Can it not take?

spaying isn't something that can't be 'fudged'...spaying envolves taking out the uterus and ovaries. (so it's not like cutting a cord and maybe it grows back...doesn't happen...) So take the cat to the vet and see if she's pregnant...if she is...tell the Humane Society where you got them, and that theres a problem. They will probably spay her (correctly) for free and take the kittens off your hands once they're weaned.
Good luck...!

The only way a spay won't "take" is if the organs are left intact. She should have a small scar on her lower belly, but depending on the color of her skin it may be very hard to see. Usually a cat is pregnant about 3 weeks when the nipples become VERY bright pink. If you think this might be the case, please take her to the vet right away. Or, call the humane society and ask them to verify that the cat has been spayed and is not pregnant.

I have never heard of a "spaying not taking" because spaying removes the reproductive organs. She could be having a false pregnancy - that I have heard of. That said, if she starts to put on weight, take her to your vet - Murphy's law is always a possibility.

Take her to the vet, like the 1st person said.
