These days its kind of a pre-engagement engagement ring.
TRADITIONALLY however, a promise ring was a ring that a boy or girl wore in order to signify a PROMISE they made to GOD that they would be chaste and devout until they got married. Age never entered into it. In fact, nuns STILL to this day wear a "wedding band" of sorts in their promise to keep their vows sacred and to be eternally faithful to God.

When I was 18, I gave my then boyfriend a promise ring....
The ring was more a symbolic way of saying "I promise to be there for you through thick and thin. Im not promising you the world nor am I trying to take our relationship to the 'engagement' stage, I just want you to know that I treasure what we have and I promise to give you my heart wholeheartedly and work out any of our complications."
He accepted my ring in the terms that he acknowledges my promise and wearing it just simply signified that he accepts my promise.
It was nothing serious, but its also not kiddish.

What's the promise? That you will marry? Or that you will someday give her an engagement ring? You can use a ring to symbolize whatever you want. And you don't have to call it a promise ring. And you don't have to tell anyone but her what the promise is.
BTW: People don't get married and get an engagement ring. It's the other way around.

I think a promise ring is sweet. I had a pre-engagment ring once. These rings are good to show you're serious about each other, but not ready for marriage yet. If she feels the same way you do she'll appreciate it. I say, 'go for it!'

I personally think promise rings are a little bit "high school"... I've never heard of anyone over the age of 17 getting one. But it doesn't mean you couldn't do it if you really want to.

I think they're pretty much for highschoolers going steady.
If you're mature enough to be thinking about commitment, you would be getting an engagement ring and plan to marry.

you are still young-i don't think they are kiddish. i got one when i was 20. they do show loyaly and respect. it's a nice gesture...and logical, especially if you are not finanicially secure enough to get married. at least she'll know it's in the future soon!
