Yes, andar, in the past tense, is an irregular verb.

Yo anduve
Tú anduviste
Ella anduvo
Nosotros anduvimos
Ellos anduvieron

In all other tenses it conjugates just as any other "ar" verb. Caminar is regular in all tenses.

Andar is irregular in the preterite (ellos anduvieron) and imperfect subjunctive (ellos anduvieran) form.

Andar can be used to mean "to walk", but caminar is more common.

The most common use of "andar" that I hear in native speakers doesn't translate well to english, but implies some kind of action or motion. For example, "Cómo andas?" = "how's it going/ what are you doing?." Sometimes it's also used instead of "estar" in the gerund form (i.e. "ando pensando" instead of "estoy pensando").

Andar is a verb to Walk
Caminar is also a verb to walk.

they both mean to walk caminando is the "ing" form of caminar, for example estoy caminando, i am walking.

andar would be, estoy andando, i am walking.
