Great Pyranese were bred the mastiff line of dogs with other herding breeds. They are "Canis lupus familiaris" just like all other dogs, and are descended from various wild canines such as the wolf.

Note that I am a cat person, but long ago and far away I almost got a Great Pyr, so this question made me go looking for an answer. To the best of my knowledge, personal as well as gleaned from the Internet, all dogs descend from wolves. I would think that if the Great Pyr's did not, AKC would mention it. I also found this quote: "Since the first arranged dog breeding, humans have been gradually creating the most diverse species in the world: Canis familiaris, the domestic dog. Diversity in dogs existed even in prehistoric times, with distinct types of families, or "breeds," arising among their wolf ancestors 3,000 to 4,000 years ago." from http://animal.discovery.com/breedselector/dogselectorindex.do
There were pages of listings for both "Great Pyrenees Dogs" and for "Dog breeds." fun question
