Or would that seem like a weird bribing kind of a thing? (I'm not thinking of a super expensive present... or is the quality work that I did for him enough for me to feel like I 'deserve' a better job with getting him a present just being overkill?)

How could this be a bribe if your boss helped you get a better job? If your former boss helped you get a better job, he/she must see that you are worthy and have potential. An expensive gift wouldn't be in order, but at least a nice thank you card with words of appreciation would be nice. Deserve a better job? There are no certainties in life and you should be thankful and grateful that your boss thought that much of you to help you find a better job. He owed you nothing. It should be part of your resume of your vocation and not anything expected. If you know what he likes or his family, then you can decide to get a token gift but don't forget the thank you card! You didn't say what kind of work it was, so therefore I can't give you some ideas of what to get for a token gift. If he has business card on display, I would say that a nice wood business cardholder would be an excellent gift. If I only knew what kind of business.I could help you with more ideas. If you don't or can't think of the gift, sent a very nice Thank you card with your own words of appreciation.

Expressing gratitude is professional. But a gift, no, not unless you two had a strong or close friendship. A card with well thought out comments from you would be more appropriate (and he can modestly display it!).
You can mention how happy you are and want to give that kind of aid to someone else one day, or state that his example is in short supply in the business world and what a great gift to you his help was.
You both sound like nice guys.

It's not a bribe if he's already done you a favour. Yes, a card or a small gift is a nice gesture for sure!

Have a plant ordered from a florist and attach a real nice thank you card. Your former boss should appreciate that.

A thank-you note would be good; or maybe take him out to lunch some time. Anything more would be a little over the top, in my opinion.

If your former employer helped you get a job, then you can consider him giving you a thankyou for a job well done, meaning he is paying you back.

It never hurts to show appreciation. Get a bottle of whatever he drinks and a card if you like. Just saying thank you.

It's good to give a present, like a sign of a sincere appreciation. If I were you, I will do it.

A thank you note, just show that your really thankful and you care. Then maybe a golf club and something for his wife or kid. To show you care about him and his family right back, because he helped you and your family.(if u have one) well good luck in your new job.

It would be very appropriate to show your appreciation by getting him an inexpensive but tasteful gift.
