Since the AHA doesn't offer first aid, I'd have to say that you should do ARC. There are other groups out there that teach, that are not ARC. Look in your phone book. I'm not a fan of ARC first aid, but they do the basics okay. There used to be a course called Medic First aid that taught what I thought was better first aid. But thats just my opinion...I could be wrong!

LOL!
That is the best reason to pick the AHA or the ARC. The card lasts longer!
The information is all the same; the standards are all set by the AHA anyway. ARC classes tend to be a little less strict as it is more community-based, whereas the AHA focuses more on professional organization/businesses, etc.
Do whichever is easier for you to get into. ARC also offeres first aid, which may or may not be useful. If you are at all medically-minded you don't need the first aid course anyway -- it is pretty basic.

ARC is better since the AHA does not offer First Aid they just do CPR. You can also look into getting training as a First Responder

What do you want and why do you want it?
ARC is easiest to get in most of the US. In many places, AHA is tough to get into, especially if you are not hospital based.
Another option, one that may be good for you, is National Safety Council- theirs is 2 years as well, they offer First Aid, and their overall costs are lower.
The basic content will be the same regardless- they all use the same standards (ECC 2006), but all have a different 'flavor'.

In my opinion, (I've been certified by both) the AHA puts on a better class with the actual hands on demonstrations and question and answer sessions. I came away from the AHA instruction more confident.

As a nursing student, they require is to have AHA. ARC is good, but i believe their card lasts about 1 year. The AHA one is good for 2 years.

AHA is more universal. More likely not have to retake the course for another job if it is already AHA. That is what most employers want that require the certification. But it does not do first aid.
