1: It is king of battle

2: it can be used in any climate, like extreme heat, extreme cold, snow, rain. It doesn't matter. So long as the fo can see the target we can hit it. It is improving with time. It is getting lighter, more accurate, and faster. The Marines just got a new howitzer. The M777. It is half the weight of its predecessor, and can be ready to fire in half the time and will be more accurate.

3 : Ammo is becoming better all the time. We use to have several fuses to deal with. Now it is down to 4 and will be down to 2. We have a new round that is gps guided and can't miss. Arty causes more damage, death and has more of a mental strain on the enemy then any other weapon.

An old joke:

Infantry is the Queen of Battle.
Artillery is the King of Battle.

Why? because the Arty puts the balls where the Queen wants them!

it has been a while since arty fired cannon balls, and aiming systems have gotten much more accurate (and more technical) since simply placing a gunner's quadrant on the piece.

The types of rounds are more lethal, the fuzing is more reliable, and the safety of firing has increased.

That said, arty is still an area target weapon. It allows the ground commander to provide a LOT of force from a (relatively) safe stand-off distance. However, it cannot 9reasonably) be used to go after an individual shooter. (Unless one wants to devastate the entire area for yards around. )

Arty is used more in force-on-force, open warfare. Personally, I would rather not be without the stuff. It's a great "convincer".

1. Useful but under used.
2. It allows the ground forces to "reach out and clobber someone" without having to rely on air cover. Very unusual to have a friendly fire incident with artillery.
3. Under the Clinton administration, they gave so many howitzers to the ski resorts, they had to go around begging to get them back. When Clinton made cuts, he cut everywhere.

1&2: Considering the fact that if we went into war with a sling shot and pebbles we wouldn't do much damage, but would have considerable damage done to ourselves, artillery is a useful and needed thing. When used correctly of course...I do believe that one of the first rules in the military and weapon training is "If it doesn't blow up the first time, throw something else at it to make it blow up...DON'T FREAKING TOUCH IT WITH YOUR BARE HANDS!!!!" (Know an idiot that almost blew his hand off picking up an unexploded explosive)

(And like Shel?? *sorry if name is wrong* said in her answer, it's hot!)

Artillery: the most effective form of weapons due to their accuracy and raw destructive and decimating power. almost everything that it hits will surely succumb or crumble or fall.

For me artillery is The bringer of violent death and is also the heart of false courage (this is for some who use these types of weapons to muster courage)
