Because we do not believe that there is nothing after death, and this is the one and only chance the immortal energy is in human form.
Like a drop of water merging with the ocean and losing its identity,
our mind will merge with the human earthly mind, the body will go back to the elements from which it was built and the life-force will continue via our/ovum; sperm etc and we may not have anything to do with it.
What happens to another life form such as the apple tree;
Everything goes back to its elements and the life force continues through its progeny.
Why not take this opportunity to enjoy in this human body - not eat, drink and be merry, but experience the Inner Peace about which saints and masters have described.

I am not thinking of living forever in a wheelchair.
How about replacing your old cells with young ones, muscles, physical health, fitness, perfect body, upgraded vision and intelligence? If today, like me, you have an interesting, fulfilling, enjoyable life, full of opportunities, discoveries and pleasures and were you given the opportunity of continuing it, replacing parts when needed, would you take it? Or would you say, "Oh, I think I am in perfect health, my mind is lucid as could be, but I am 250 and had enough, I'll go to the Afterlife now." I don't think too many people, if confronted with that reality, would really reason that way. On the other hand, no one would stop you.
Could people of the Middle Ages predict that we would be able to travel out of space? What do you imagine science will be in 300 or 500 years?

Well, I find life exciting. I still want to build a few Sailboats. I not built my electric car or submarine. I want to explore the oceans and not just watch it on TV. Would like to travel beyond the solar system one day and explore some of this Galaxy and others. I have learned a lot of things, but, not learned it all. Still a lot I want to learn about. The list just keeps going for myself. I told my woman the other night, I not think I will have time to do it all before I die.
I believe in God and trust Jesus. I believe God and Jesus are real and look forward to my next step in life.

I've had dreams that threaten me with eternal life and they have been nightmares. Serious dreams about becoming an undying god and strangeness like that. I DO NOT want any more than this life. I feel a lonliness and boredom and jealousy of simplicity coming from the Dreamweaver. But being threatened with eternal life is just too scary. I feel sorry for God. He has been put in a position of living forever and it must get tedious. I agree with your view totally.

I Agree. I don't think anyone can even fathom eternity. The closer I come in my own attempt to do this, the more I realize that being dead sounds like a much needed break. Most of life is suffering. That is why the concept of heaven appeals to most people. It's almost too bad that somebody didn't devise a religion that was believable to people with IQ's over eighty.

I have lived a very long time. I look forward to moving on. I think it's going to be wonderful beyond my dreams.
Life can be hard but I am glad I had the chance to experience it. When you stop to think there is so much good on earth. I will miss the snow falling softly, and the mountains.
I am not ready to end it all. I want to move on.

I don't think people necessarily want to live forever. I think they just feel that since they have to be here for almost a century or more, they would at least like to be in good health so that they can still enjoy life.

I would like to be able to live for as long as I want!
This is subtley different from saying "I want to live forever"
I think I could live for several centuries at least without getting really bored. There's so much to learn, and so much to do.
There's enough experiences in this world to last millenia.
But eventually, I think I would become bored with life. And so ultimately I'd have to agree with you.

Amen, Brother!!!The worst curse to anyone would be to live forever, see everyone you love die and and outlive your great-great grandkids. Everone ya ever cared about . Like you , I have seen enough of the ones I love the most pass on before me is enough to bear. The more I see society decline I don't think I want to see it further flushed down the toilet

I think the answer depends on how you look at life. If you think you are here waiting until you go to heaven to be with God then many people would not value life the same way as someone who does not believe in that. But if you believe this is all we get to be close to G-d and that life is about finding that peace here, then life is very valuable. I don't personally have an answer for this one, but I lean against life after death and so I think this life is important, but I don't know how or why.
