Remember New Orleans in the days following hurricane Katrina?

martial law is not a pretty picture isn't it? I wonder, would they really shoot you just because your out after curfew, or is that just an excuse to kill?

it is being abused, why do you think they keep ignoring the constitution? we are already under martial law, not the hard martial law but soft, for now, by declaring war they have an excuse to disregard civil liberties. we have war on drugs going on for decades, which gives them the excuse to do random checks whenever it suits them, of course it is not about drugs, however, we have war on poverty, war on terror, so we are in perpetual war. so the constitution will continue to be ignored whenever it suits their agenda at the time, oh they will allow it when it doesn't interfere with those agendas, but as soon as any of those pesky unalienable rights get in the way you have what happened in new orleans, what happens at peaceful assemblies, which they have a right to do, but are denied.

All they have to do is make up some pretend war and they have their excuse to do whatever the heck they want. IN a place I am familiar with, swansboro nc they did just that, they declared martial law in a small part of town, this was actually a practice run, they were checking everyone who left or came in, they wanted to do extensive searches of vehicles even if you did not break any laws. They are practicing for teh real thing to come about, and you don't practice something like this extensivly unless you plan on using it.

this is just a foregleam of what is in store for the whole country.

It happens in third world countries all the time. Everyone just stays home for a day until the military and political factions fight out who is running the government. Then you go about your life as usual but with a few more random ID checks and frisk searches by heavily armed police and soldiers.

In the US in the 1960s, the police used to announce at peace demonstrations: "this has been declared an unlawful assembly - all rights of speech and assembly are hereby temporarily suspended - please disburse - refusal to disperse will meet with arrest". Then the police throw tear-gas and people throw rocks, break windows and overturn cars as they leave the area.

Basically though, the police and national guard will succeed in clearing the street. Brute force works. Civil wars are very rare events. Americans don't have the stomach for one.

Ask someone from Germany before the wall came down! A person would have to have a documented reason to be going wherever they are going. Additionally there are curfews, roadblocks, and a whole lot of other issues to deal with. Basically if Marshall Law is declared, kiss your freedom goodbye.

Under Marshal Law, the military is in control of the law and thus certain constitutional protections and freedoms no longer apply (for example: freedom of assembly, protections against search & seizure). It is generally reserved for states of emergency such as natural disaster and war. Upon resolution of the emergency, constitutional law should be reinstated.

If Marshal Law is declared without a compelling reason and liberty is at risk, it is every citizen's duty to rise up in revolt.

"[W]hen a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security."

Bush can absolutely declare a state of emergency, and in turn marital law, and the 08' election would be postponed .. but doubt that he will.. martial law means a body of law imposed by the military over civil law..\ independent voting RP

Bush wouldnt leave office

FEMA would take over and start sending people to there concentration camps

Personal firearms would be taken

Gas would be rationed then denied to public

People would be shot in the street

US troops would be deployed in the country

The constitution would be torn up and **** on along with the bill of rights and your precious habeus corpus

Honestly it would be similar to Hitlers take over in the 30s
