Perhaps to show humans what can happen when we let Pride rule in our lives. But I think it's because this is how God needed things to be. Lucifer means shining one, he is a fallen archangel, thus a supernatural spirit. Lucifer's spirit had knowledge of evil and challenged God. God did not kill him, he cursed him. In Genesis 3:15 God states that the woman's offspring called "He" is Christ, who will one day defeat the Serpent. Satan could only cause Christ to suffer, while Crist will detroy Satan with a fatal blow.
In Revelation 12 verse 10-12 is your Answer: SALVATION..."And they over came him by the blood of the Lamb by the word of their testimony..."
I think that this life here is a test. God has given us free will to choose. Choose to believe in him or live away from him. God wants us to choose him even if its seems to be a harder way to live. God wants to see our trust in him, when there is so much evil around us. John 3:16-17

The reason is because the story is a myth not a real event. The myth was developed to explain why Christians believe in a dualistic world of good and evil with God being the force of good and a Devil being a force of evil.
I think that the morale of the myth, however, is that the way to serve and love God is to serve and love human beings/God's creation. After all, in the myth Lucifer rebelled and was cast out of heaven when God told the angels that they had to serve and bow down to mankind. Lucifer claimed that he would only bow to God. This was deemed a sin of pride. For this reason, I find it very weird when people talk about loving and "believing" in God or some incarnation of God and then scorning people because of their belief in an ideal.

Because needed someone to blame for everything wrong in the world, and an example to help prevent future rebellions (but, rebelling against God should be impossible if he is omnipotent and omniscient).

the same reason God did not slay Adam and Eve after they sinned against Him... God gives us freedom of choice, and allows us to exist with or apart from Himself...
