Most kids potty train between the ages of 2 and 3. 17 months is still too young to really worry about it. Just buy a potty chair and put it in the bathroom and let her ask questions about it and follow her lead - if she is not ready (and she wont be this early) DONT force it. Forcing potty training is a sure fire step to a long drawn out process.

She is a bit young for training...however if she is starting to show signs that she is ready then go for it, you have to take your opportunity and run with it!
She would be showing interest in the potty, sleeping through the night, more often then not, without peeing/pooping...etc.
My son was around a year and a half when he ripped off his Diaper and ran to the potty yelling "pee pee!" I had people tell me he was too young and not to do it...I listened and ended up with a disaster .....he was ready and I didn't listen to myself or him and train him then...I should have.
They are right to say "Don't force" but when they are ready, they are ready and encouragement is key! Letting them watch YOU go helps as well...even before they are ready, it gets them curious so when they are ready they want to try it...if it comes to that then let her try...even if she doesn't go.
With my son I told him I was going on the big girls and boys potty so I didn't pee pee in my underwear....he liked this so I stuck with it and eventually he wanted to go...we started off sitting but that didn't last long before he seen daddy going and wanted to do it just like daddy so we let him and this was the key in getting him to go all the time. reminders help them too....like setting a timer every hour (or whatever you notice her pattern to be after eating/drinking something) and at least trying to go. Make a semi big deal out of her actually going "Oh that's a good job!" But don't over do it or it can scare them. Don't scold for accidents...say something like " That's ok this time, but next time lets try to make it to the potty" in a very calm non-judgemental, non-punishment way.
Don't be to concerned if she hasn't started showing signs yet...2-3 years is about when they normally start...you got some time to prepare her for it (like showing her you use the potty). And don't take everyones word for it....you know your child best and will have a better Idea of what will work for her and what methods you and her are most comfortable with.
Good luck when the time comes! Potty training can be easy or hard depending on the kid....just keep calm and relaxed about it!

she is too young.
most kids don't start potty training until they are around 2 years old.
if you are only the babysitter than you need to discuss potty training with the parents. especially with a child so little.

let her watch you for a few months when you go to the bathroom and tell her that you have to go potty or you have to go pee and she will eventually catch on ..very time consuming, but it works ..Ive done it 5 times with girls so far and working on potty training a 3rd boy right now.
boys are a bit trickier though so be glad you have a girl.

Obviously, you discuss it with the pediatrician. Or take the easy way out and put her in day care and let them do it for you.
