I work at a retail store that sells premium denim, and top quality name brands that are always in. I am 17 years old, and just recently, Alberta has bumped it's minimum wage from $7.00 to $8.00. A month and a half ago, $20 000.00 worth of items were stolen/missing within a 6 month period. My boss had discussed our "raises" with the President and Founder, and he had refused to give us a raise. I am making 7.25$ and hour, when i should be making $8.00. I don't want to quit, because it's a fantastic job and I save hundreds with my 50% off discount. Can anyone give me some suggestions onto what I should do? Considering that i'm just an employee,..

It is most unfortunate that a store selling denim products is adopting unfair and illegal practices.

You can complain to the labour authorities, throgh a registered trade union and you will get justice !!

Whether or not a place has to pay minimum wage is based on the number of employees in some cases and sometimes it is based on the amount of annual income the business makes as far as what tax bracket they are in.

You also need to check if there are exceptions to minimum wage laws in Alberta. In the US, if you are under age 18, or if you are a full-time student, employers can legally opt to pay you less than minimum wage. I believe that it is something liek 85% of minimum wage that they can pay you. If Canada has similar laws, you may be getting all that they will legally have to pay.

Minimum wage requirements only apply to companies over a certain size. First make sure your company falls into that category. If so, check with your government offices. They can investigate allegations without implicating you.
