My shiba inu had kennel cough and today we visited the vet and he gave him some pills which he doesn't want at all. We tried to feed him it smush with apple sauce. He only ate a half.

What are some ways you can make your puppy eat medicine/pill? We also tried doing cheese with small portions of the pill but he's smart and spit it out.

I've tried putting it in peanut butter before and when that didn't work, I've held her mouth open and put the pill on the far end of her tongue then held her mouth shut and massaged her throat until I felt her swallow. My vet actually showed me that technique.

You can buy a gadget called a pet-piller. It has a rubber end for putting the pill in and you put that in the dogs mouth and press the end once it is passed the dog's tongue. DON"T shoot it down its throat though!!

I find the easiest way is to give the tablet in a bit of mince - turn it into a game by tossing a few empty bits first and then throw the loaded one. Works every time!!

I hope your dog gets better soon.

You will have to put it in the dogs mouth. ok this works when I do it. Hold pill, go to the inside of their cheek and slide down the teeth towards the back of the teeth. There is a gap there and no teeth. The dog will open mouth your figures are in a place where there are no teeth. You slide the pill to the back of the tongue so he can not refuse it. He will have to swallow it. They cant spit up but they can get it out of their month if you dont get it to the back of their tongue. (I am not saying to shove it down his throat.) Just put it pretty far to the back of the tongue so they can not get it out that way they will swallow it. If you go along the inside of their cheek to the back of teeth you should not get bit. Do it quickly! Less time for the dog to react. I had the vet show me. It works. If all else fails go back and have vet show you.
Hope this helps!

There are two ways. You can use liver sausage - two small balls. Put the pill in the first and let the pup see that you have two. It will want the next one and quickly swallow the first. Second, ask your vet to teach you how to "pill" a dog. It's not difficult and always give a treat afterward. Good Luck.

Try these:

Moist Cat food
Marshmallows
Peanut Butter
Butter

Or open your dogs mouth and put pills at back of throat- close mouth and have a small syringe full of water- keeping the mouth somewhat closed, give your dog a drink of the water so that they swallow the pills. Good Luck!

I place my down in a treat after they have gone outside and came back in. Give a small bite if they spit keep trying with small portion only
Good luck

Hotdogs are the best. Split it in two. The first piece you give has the pill inside but be sure you are sitting right in front of him teasing him with the second piece. He will swallow the first piece with the pill to make sure he gets a shot at the second half. Works everytime.

By far the easiest way I found to get my dog to swallow a pill was to put it in plain cream cheese. The cream cheese is slippery and goes down before they even know what happened. LOL
If the pills are big, you can crush them before mixing into the cream cheese. (fyi...get a pill crusher cheaper at a pharmacy than at a pet store).

You could try rolling it up with some hamburger meat or pushing it into the center of a little bit of hot dog. If that doesn't work then you could just put the pill in his mouth, hold his mouth shut gently with one hand and with the other gently stroke the front of his throat a couple of times until he swallows it.

Ha ha with a wise dog who doesnt like pills the only way is to manually pill them.. and it sucks. I have a crafty dog who hates pills and NOTHING I did hid them well enough, you shove it as far down their throat as you can and hold their mouth shut and massage their throat.. keep an eye though the smart ones learn to pretend they swallowed and then spit it out after. http://www.seefido.com/html/my_veterinarian_has_prescribed.htm
