Yes and way to many reasons to list. Different people, different reasons. There are a huge number of patterns.
To attempt to prevent in custody suicides police do look for certain things. Usually first time arrestees for a minor sex related crimes or domestic. These same things do not translate well to the general population.

I have seen the results of a lot of suicides. Not the act itself.
One was a girl who's compulsions to steal kept getting her kicked out of the houses family and friend's houses she was staying at. She was getting kicked out of her step brother's house the next morning. She went into the woods that night with a handgun she had stolen from her friend's mother and shot herself.
Another was a country boy that kept getting sent back to jail for violating probation because he couldn't keep a job and had bought a bottle of cheap wine to drown in. The main reason he had probation was for 5 DUIs and he had been sober for a year and a half. I guess it was too much. He had his wife go buy him a pack of cigarettes and while she was gone put a hunting rifle in his mouth on the front porch.
There's more but I think I have told enough

No... they usually are done by the time I show up. I have seen the aftermath of MANY.
You ask why? Maybe you should go to the psychology forum (if there is one) because this is one of the most puzzling questions that will ever face someone who sees the results of the ultimate decision. While there may be excuses (money, failed relationship, legal troubles, etc.), they will never be logical.

Yes. In New York City, there are a lot of suicide cases, especially New York police officers who apparently kill themselves more often than the general population does. I wonder why.
