Young man, take a deep breath. I applaud your determination and patriotism, but it seems that you have the wrong idea of the military. Certainly you will see some action but not what you see in the movies. West Point is a difficult academy to get into, so like every military commander you should have a contingency plan just in case you cannot accomplish the mission; what I mean is to consider ROTC as well. Good luck to you.

You sound like a fine young man. My son is 11 and he also wants to go to West Point. Only thing is when you graduate from West Point you are an Army officer, at the rank of 2nd LT. Most officers do paperwork. But if the Iraqi war is still going on in 9 or 10 years (which I doubt) and if you get sent there you may have to kill some people. That is really not what you should be thinking about right now. Killing people is not very cool and should only be done under extreme circumstances. Thank you for your patriotism. The military needs young people like yourself. You seem highly motivated and dedicated. Good Luck with your future endeavors.

Working toward a career in the Army is a lofty goal. Even if you don't make West Point there are so many opportunities for different careers you will be able to choose. Hopefully 9 years from now we will not be fighting in Iraq. But who knows what the future might bring.

Killing the enemy is not a lofty goal. Defeating the enemy is a lofty goal. Once you get there you will discover that the army is not charged with killing the enemy it is charged with defeating him. Killing is just a sad part of defeating him.

I think you my have missed one possibility.

You could be DEAD, the first day of your tour. You could be killed because you even see the enemy. I know you are young. I was your age, when I planned to go to Sandhurst, in ENgland and become an office. I was certain of my own mortality. A quirk of fate led me into a different career. But a few brushes with death have convinced me I AM mortal.

ALso understand - you may be sent into a war by a president who simply wants the headlines to bolster his position & a few dead Americans is a small price to pay.

One reason I didn't go to Sandhurst was I realised I would be sent to places to fight an enemy whose position I might well agree with, I might be sent to places to fight people who were NO THREAT to my country.

My best friend from High School is in Iraq, about to be withdrawn. A Lieutenant-Colonel, in the British Army. He's about got his 20 in. I'm looking forward to a bit party-to-end-all-parties, when he's out.

Don't plan your military career around west point. You need a 4.0 grade average every year in high school. You need to do at least 2 sports, lots of community service, and political recommendations from senators and others. And even after that only 1 out of 50 make it.

None, because if you make it that far, you will be an officer and will be doing paperwork or making coffee for your Company Commander. Hate to piss on your parade but the enlisted side gets to have all the fun.
