After struggling with clinical depression for years, all the time resisting medication and counseling out of male pride and a fear of missing opportunities because of the social stigma that still attaches itself to mental illness, I finally sought help. In all likelihood it saved my life. It has certainly increased my usefulness to my family and community. I still struggle with abnormal anxiety from time to time, especially when under stress, but at least I'm facing reality again. I continue to hide this fact from most of my religious friends and family because I fear they will assume my depression is a result of my being non-religious.

Answering this question is stepping out on a limb for me--but I hope it might help someone who is afraid, as I was, to see the light and seek help.

This is in Religion and Spirituality? LOL! Does religion make people depressed or just attract people who are already depressed?

How do You know how many people aren't answering You because they either don't take an anti-depressant, or they don't want to admit they do?

I do. An SRI, like Prozac. Used to take lithium, too, but then i got MS and i fall down a lot, and they said i might accidentally blow up half the country.

I took antidepressants for a few months after the birth of my 3rd child I had a bout with severe postpartum depression and took the antidepressants until other meds stabilized my hormone levels so I wasn't having pendulum mood swings..

It's not normal to burst into tears when asked to pass the salt at dinner... Or to go into a rage over a drippy faucet.. I am normally a pretty calm person but with my hormones all out of whack I was going from euphoria to suicidal depression several times daily and needed to help while stabilizing..

As it turns out I went into early menopause right after the birth of my daughter and that was the problem.. Now I take synthetic hormones so my hormone level remain normal and I no longer swing on the emotional pendulum it took about 6 months for the dr's and I to get it all straightened out..

I used to take Ritalin when I was a kid, then I was put on Prozac, Zanax, Lexapro and Trileptil (at the same time), Wellbutrin, Paxil, Effexor. I'm not on any thing now because Borderline Personality Disorder can't be treated with medication. They didn't realize that's what was wrong with me when they were shoving all these pills down my throat.

I was on Lexapro for a short time to deal with depression. I don't take any antidepressants anymore. I've made improvements in my life and attitude, and that has helped tremendously.

The 62-year-old with the holier-than-thou attitude should ask him/herself, if God sustains the believer, why are there so many Christians taking drugs for depression, anxiety, etc. Oh, right, they're not REAL Christians. ¬_¬

Take Effexor XR for depression.
Take Abilify for my Bipolar.
Take Thiothixene to help rid me of spontaneous bad thoughts(like voices.).
Take Topamax to encourage my body to lose weight.

That is my medication in a nut shell.

Hope that helps your survey.

One person asks if they cause tripping?
Not if they are working correctly.
I was prescribed Prozac at one point. It caused my bipolar to increase cycles until I was cycling from normal to sad every 10 seconds. A very bad trip indeed. Every medication effects everyone differently. What doesn't work for me may be the one that works for you.

Me! Me! Me! I not only take anti-depressants, I take TWO different ones. I have had clinical depression for much of my life. I feel no shame in taking medication for it. I still struggle from time to time, but I am ok with that.

No AntD's for me, but I've taken diazepam prior to dental appointments. I don't know why I FREAK out at the dentists office, so they sedate me with 20 mg and I'm chillin' for 2-3 hours. Oh yeah!

God Bless You!

Did take them last year for a short time following a failed relationship and some major family issues...found a spiritual solution to my problem a few months after I started and haven't used them since.

Yes, and I have for many years for clinical depression. My faith and praying help, but I need my medication also. I have discontinued it several times and have always needed to return to it.
