We have a 2 1/2 year old English Mastiff. For the last 2 days he is acting like he doesn't know who we are. He doesnt come to us when called. And stays far away. He just stands back and looks. He will run up for just a second, like he remembers for just a moment and then runs away again. He will eat and drink though. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like he isn't properly trained....

You need to get with an animal behaviorist.

What you are describing could be from *many* things. THE most important thing for you to do right now is see a vet.

Its costly, but you absolutlye need to rule out a medical issue as the cause of his behavior. Consider how loss of hearing might cause some of the things you have listed... might your dog have an ear infection? This is only a rough example of course.

Tell the vet in detail what is going on so that they can make the proper checks and take the proper tests. Don't be afraid to ask questions, suggest things, and follow hunches when discussing it with the vet. You know your dog best. That said, listen carefully too and weigh what you hear against what you observe.

Once you have ruled out a medical issue as the cause, *then* you can concentrate on the behavior. If you know its just Fido being willful, or indeed silly, then you can decide what action to take. A fun, humane and positive training class might help to strenghten your bond with your dog while re-enforcing good behavioir.

Good luck, and don't ever give up on your dog. Theres a solution to most dog problems if you look in the right places.

Hope this helps!

Since this is abnormal behavior you should give the vet a call and explain his symptoms. Maybe you should set up an appointment with the vet.
