are there any units in the marine corps that go into battle by choppers?

and since im asking this question, might as well ask another related one

after boot camp and schooling to qualify for weapons and such, are u assigned to a unit?

and at that..are there names or seperate groups in units? such as:

amphibious vehicle assault
ground assault
air mobile assault

that kinda stuff?

IF there are, how would u go about being assigned to one? do you even have the option to applying to what unit you want to be in?

In the Corps they call it vertical envelopment and they do quite a bit of it. Mostly infantry units as you can imagine. An MEU(SOC) will do plenty of helo ops, from the ship to the beach probably a little helocasting and maybe some parachute jumps depending on the unit involved. Bet a few Marines will give their experiences soon enough.

Some of my info may be a tad 'dated', I was a Seabee in Vietnam, I served with the 1st and 3rd MARDIVs.

At that time nearly all Marine units were 'airmobile', but that is really an army term as many, if not most of the army units were not 'air mobile'.

With the exception of armored units, all Marine units were capable of arriving on a battlefield via helicopter, it was called "vertical envelopment" and was the Corps stock in trade, even their engineers (and us Seabees) had special lightweight equipment intended to be brought into the field by choppers. We called our equipment like that "tinker toys".

Go ask a recruiter what options can be guaranteed. When I was in the corps I did amphibious, ground assault and vertical assault.

Are you kidding? They're the freakin' MARINES. First in, last out, toughest military force on the planet.

Of course they have amphibious vehicle assault, ground assault, and helicopter-assisted assault units.
