First: Ignore anyone who says "it sucks" but can't tell you why it sucks. They're saying what their friends say because it's popular to do so within that group.
There are two problems with Vista.
1. Hardware. Some hardware makers haven't rewritten their drivers for Vista. That problem is getting smaller as hardware makers catch up, though some very old hardware may never work. If you're buying a new computer, there won't be a problem buying it with Vista.
2. Software. Some older software is unstable in Vista. I don't know of any recent software that still has a problem, but I have a 4-year-old photo touchup program that Nikon abandoned 3 years ago that's flaky.

Everyone's right to a degree, but in particular it seems to be an effort on Microsoft's part to make it a more visually appealing operating system with the same bells and whistles that are present on a Mac OS. (Which I saw someone post in the earlier answers)
There are some cool things about it, but you do need a high end system to make it perform the way it's designed to run. One of the cooler things I've found that it's supposed to do is use external USB memory keys and flash memory to augment the system RAM. This is a means to expand memory albeit temporarily so you can have a little more performance.
From a business standpoint trying to use it in a domain, absolutely not. We've had three Vista machines in a lab right beside three XP machines with matching specs and there's no way we'd ever put them together on our network. It's just not ready to deploy yet for a business environment.

I heard (or examine) someplace that Dell would be freeing by ability of 4th quarter this 365 days or early next 365 days with residing house windows XP SP3 (provider %. 3 i think of), considering the fact that a good number of shoppers are demanding decrease back the XP. i'm purely uncertain if different manufacturers will stick to. Microsoft would be freeing the XP SP3 because of the call for of XP. I believe you that Vista "SUCKS!!!!". i've got have been given a pc with Vista pre-put in. If it warn't pre-put in i could in no way ever use it.

1) Most operating systems take 1-2 years before they mature
2) Only 6% of the computers have Vista installed. I suspect most of the comments are from people who are not using Vista.
3) Many programs people use with XP have not been updated yet to work with Vista or optimized for Vista.
4) A lot of drivers have not been written yet for Vista. Who wants to have to buy a new printer when they get Vista?
5) Many computer manufactures are selling systems that are incapable of running Vista well. 512 MB RAM , slow processors; video adapters that do not support direct X10; Vista Home Basic; loads of crapware installed; Norton preinstalled, etc.
Many people who do not know better will choose these based solely on low price, then the manufacturer and the owner will blame Vista when the new computer runs like garbage.
6) People often update to Vista on a computer that is not suited for Vista; don't even bother to run the Vista Upgrade Adviser before they do it; and then blame Vista when their computer runs slow.
7) Microsoft misleads them as to the hardware requirements.
XP Requirements per Microsoft : Updated May 7, 2007
At least 1.5 GB of available space on the hard disk
Pentium 233-MHz or faster (300 MHz is recommended)
64 MB of RAM ; 128 MB is recommended
CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive
Microsoft's listed Vista requirements are just as laughable.
======================
Windows XP was first released on October 25, 2001.
That is almost a six year run; the longest for Microsoft.
Win 2.0, 2.1, 3.0, 3.1, 95, 98 and 2000 were 1-3 year runs.
Operating systems seem to require 1-2 years for the hardware to catch up with the software requirements and for the software to be refined. I expect in a year or two no one will think XP is better than Vista.
Every two to three years the amount of RAM on a system typically doubles. In two to three more years the typical system will ship with over 4GB and will require switching from Vista 32 which can only support about 3.5 GB, to Vista 64 or a new 64 bit operating system. This leaves little if any time to enjoy the benefits of using a mature operating system.
Microsoft plans to release Windows 7 in 3 years (2010).
They plan to ship 32 and 64 bit systems. I think they should only ship the 64 bit Windows 7 and start thinking about 128 bit systems, voice control; a whole new approach to using operating systems; and better integration with TV, game consoles, phones, media recorders/players, etc.
http://www.liewcf.com/blog/archives/2007/07/windows-7-the-next-microsoft-operating-system/
My guess is people will use Vista 32 until 2010/2011 and then update to 64 bit Windows 7.
===============
At the rate people are switching to Vista it will probably take at least two more years before half of the Windows computers use Vista.

basically, vista doesn't really suck. the problem is that it is a new os which require a lot of resources. so if you're trying to install it on an earlier model of computers with only 512 mb or below of ram, most likely it would be slow. also, some drivers aren't compatible with it just yet so some hardwares aren't working as properly. some softwares aren't also working that fine.

Vista is good if it's installed to a system with compatible hardware and software, if not then it can be hell.
