and how is it relevant to our lives?

Throughout the Bible, the definition of faith is closest to what "Ace of Spades" remarked - despite the epithet.

Some equate faith as a belief or an ideal. But it is actually taking what we believe and stepping out in it. For example, if God tells me to go and pray for a particular person, it is not enough for me to believe in God or believe it was He Who told me to go. By faith, I get up, go and do as He says. This is what it means in James when he wrote, "faith without works is dead". Faith is the verb to our belief.

Everywhere you look in the Bible, faith was an exercise, not a belief system. When you read the "Hall of Faith" in Hebrews, you will see, "By faith, Noah...", or "By faith, Abraham..." and then see how they carried out (works) what they believed.

well, the Bible says, "it's the substance of THINGS UNSEEN!"
how is it relevant in our lives??? for me, I sum it up like this... someone told me one day (and I process to be the great christian. haha)... that I was an example of "someone who CLAIMED to have alot of faith; but, sure was SCAREY!" Faith requires TRUST; trust that everything will turn out alright; even if we don't SEE IT now! It is very relevant in MY life to BELIEVE that "obstacles" will pass-with-time. To have faith that everything will be ok.

Belief in that which is not seen. Very, consider the money you spend every day. It has value because you have faith that it does. It is just worthless paper given value by the FRB.

Actually, the FRB doesn't really do much of that anymore. All of the money currently in print in the United States is not backed up by gold... instead it is backed up by our strong economy, and as long as the nation stands the dollar will be worth something. And without the nation there would be no dollar, so in essence as long as it exists the dollar is worth something. and the proof of its worth is all around us.

EDIT: THIS IS MY 100TH ANSWER!!! WOO-HOO!!!!!

I think it's just believing God is good, in spite of what you see. Consider Moses, he didn't even know about Jesus. Or King David. They just believed when something went Bad in their lives which it often Did, that God was good and wanted to bless them. And indeed, God did bless them. David was a man after God's own heart. Was it because he was so perfect? No....he just always turned to God in his time of need and didn't seem to just rely on himself or others. He trusted God to be good to him. And God was.

Lean not on your own understanding... trust in the father, for if he takes care of a sparrow, shall he not take care of you?
And... if he is for you and he is, who can be against you.
Pray, trust in his will .... for his will be done, not mine.... amen
