I have a 5 month old chihuahua who is SO sweet. He is a great dog on so many levels, except that he is insanely hyper and energetic it is driving me crazy (and it's not just bc he is a puppy- many chi owners have commented on how crazy he is!). I love having my dog and I give him as much as I possibly can, but I am worried that we just don't match personality wise. I constantly think that he would be happier with a family or someone who wants a dog to be jumping around and playing 24/7.... I am very torn bc I don't want to give him up, yet I get very frustrated with him. Is it possible that he has dog ADD?? Does that even exist? I would like some advice on what I should or could do about this. And please don't write saying I am a horrible person for even thinking about giving him up, bc if I did, and I'm not saying that I will, I would find him the best home possible. Thanks

why don't you see if letting him hang out with another dog his size calms him down. maybe he needs to be around another pooch sometimes to get out some of that doggie energy.

Does he get regular exercise? ANY dog will be hyper if they have a lot of pent-up energy, and unfortunately, a lot of people with small dogs don't realize that they need to exercise just the same as a big dog. I have two small dogs myself, and they would probably be tearing apart the house if I didn't make sure they were able to get rid of their energy in a good way every day.

If you have daily long play sessions, outside if possible, but inside it alright, or take at least a walk a day (and not just to the corner and back), the hyper energy should diminish somewhat. All pups will be hyper sometimes, but it will get worse and worse if your dog doesn't use up his energy in a better way daily.

I have 3 chi's and they each have a different personality. My youngest, Alana is like yours, very hyper, jumps and runs like a rabbit. Love to stir up trouble with my cat. The other female, Paquita who is 3 was very bossy when she was younger,my oldest Pedro, who is Paquita's dad is more subdued and very sensitive.

My suggestion would be to give it a while. Do you plan on breeding, if not having him fixed may help some. Chi's take a lot of extra attention. They thrive on it. Do you work? If so he is missing you through the day and wants to play when you get home. Walks also help. Is this your first Chi?

I wish you all the luck!

The best thing you can do for him is to get him a playmate. Chihuahuas should always have another chi to keep them company. They do better in pairs. My chis are not hyper at all. Even the pups. They will play hard for 30 minutes, then sleep for 3 hr........lol
