I'm not Mormon and I don't know who Fanny Alger is! Does she make candy? Oh, that's Fanny Farmer. No, I just don't have a clue!!

She was a house maid that lived in the same house as the Smiths. Supposedly she had an illicit affair with Joseph Smith causing Oliver Cowdery to severely rebuke Smith calling it a "dirty nasty affair". Because of this false charges were made against Cowdery and he was excommunicated from the church and he and his family thrown out of their house by the "saints". Soon after this the "Saints" were thrown out of their houses by "Christian" mobs and run out of town.
Many Mormons say Smith had multitudes of wives yet Joseph Smith (and Emma) publically and strongly denied this. Most if not all of these alleged wives were sealed to Smith after he was dead. Joseph Smith III is their only son through Emma Smith. About the only account that I have seen in Mormon history of Smith being with any other women that had any possibility of being true is this Fanny Alger affair. It is possible the doctrines of "Spiritual Wives" and "Celestial Marriage" sprang forth from this affair in order to justify it or cover it up. Polygamy seems to have came forth well after Smith's death and was conjured up by Brigham Young. Ironically the Book of Mormon bitterly condemns any form of polygamy calling it a whoredom and abomination to God.
