We are two couple in our late 30's looking to relax and have a bit of fun. Night life is not essentail, but we'd like an area with good restaurants and shopping and close to some of the attractions. We've never been to California before. We would also like an area that has beachfront condo/house rentals that are oceanfront. It doesn't have to be the priciest area, but we do want somewhere nice whre we can hear the ocean at night. We are going in November.

There are a ton of vacation rental homes right next to the sand on the Balboa peninsula in Newport Beach. These can range from "almost falling down" to truly luxurious. There are two agencies that manage most of them - if only I could remember the names! :) sorry. This is a somewhat pricey area but should be less so now that the summer is over.
If you decide to try it, be sure to get an oceanfront place on the peninsula, NOT the island (which is surrounded by water but since it is in the center of the harbour, it has no surf). There's lots to do and many restaurants - a lot, in fact, in walking or biking distance. And with a car, you have access to an immense number of restaurants, world class shopping and many, many things to do.

Ok, an update - if you do decide to look into it, I just figured out how to find the agencies - one of the rental agencies is Burr White Realty and the other is Associated Realty. These are the two that have signs posted on most of the oceanfront condos..... have fun.

Laguna Beach should be a great location. It is in Orange County south of Newport Beach. I think it's an ideal local where you can stay and relax. Lots of restaurant and lots of shops around. You can also take a nice drive up the Pacific Coast Highway toward Los Angeles and a lots of places to stop to visit. You can also drive down the coast toward San Diego too.

Slightly north is Newport Beach and Huntington Beach. You can find some reasonable priced condo/house rentals during November. Huntington Beach is close to Disneyland and Knotts Berry Farm within 30 minutes drive. If you want to visit Universal Studio and Hollywood, stay near Santa Monica Beach, Venice Beach, or Redondo Beach. From these locations, it is about 30 to 40 minutes to Universal Studio and Hollywood. Beverly Hills is about 15 to 20 minutes. You may want to use Google map or get a tour book from the Auto Club.

We live in Southern California and also spend a weekend by the beach to relax. We like Santa Barbara and San Clemente. Early November weather is ok in S. California. Night breeze is cool. A jacket is required. The temperature will drop to about mid 50s to low 60s at night. Day time temperature can soar to mid 70s to mid 80s.

Welcome to California and have fun.

Why dont you try Laguna Niguel or Dana Point Area. That is a real nice part of Orange County. Disneyland is maybe 30-40 drive from Laguna if you go straight up the 5 freeway. If you decide to stay in the Laguna Niguel or Dana Point area..Aliso Creek Beach is a nice place to go and is very family oriented. You are also close to Laguna Beach where you can go window shopping and walk along the cliffs. I hope you have a nice trip.

Try Hermosa beach or Redondo beach. I use to live close by and the nightlife is great and theres some really cool beach condos that are right over the sand that you can rent for a nice fee! Laguna beach is another nice one u might want to try but id say the nightlife is better in the firs 2 i listed

The santa barbara area is divine. beachfront condos about a 1/2 hour outside of the city for upwards of $1500/week. most sleep upwards of 4.

Santa Barbara has a georgeous coast, trips to the local islands, whale watching, a zoo, natural history museum, parks, playgrounds, plenty of shopping and a teeming social life. Kid-friendly. but kids don't overwhelm the place either.
