It'd be at least three days after the operation mostly. What it should look like is a dry area along the stitches line, with the two edges of skin healing together and the skin a healthy color.

Infection will be showing a crusty amber colored coating along the incision line, sort of like beige sugar, and seeping in one or two areas of dark colored liquid - just a few drops maybe, and no it won't look like fresh blood. The skin by the seeping may be an angry red instead of a whitish skin color.

If the wound isn't rather dry, and you do see this crusty stuff, you can use a wet, warm washcloth to dab LIGHTLY to clear off the area without making the cat uncomfortable, and let it air dry. I would not put peroxide or soap on the area because that would hurt too much and the incision is too deep for that.

They will be very very red and puffy, may start to ooze a pus like substance and there could be a slight smell to the area. If she just got spayed there will a bit of redness and swelling so that is normal, but if it's looking very swollen and has you worried call the vet's office that did the surgery and maybe take her back for a check up.

The area would be an angry red color, and very hot to the touch.

I just had my kitten spayed, and she got a bump under the stitches. Turns out it was just a mild reaction to the dissolving stitches.
