Grilled onions are really quite easy - peel and onion, wrap in aluminum foil with a pat of butter and toss on the grill until soft :) To "liven" things up, add McCormick's Salt and Spice, some Old Bay or even some hot peppers. If you don't have an actual grill, you can toss the wrapped onion in hte oven for a bit or even a toaster oven.
Enjoy!

Get an onion and slice it.
Pour three or four tablespoons of oil into a large frying pan, and set the stove at medium high heat. Separate the onion slices into rings and put in the pan, salt with 2 teaspoons of salt, add 1 teaspoon of pepper, then cook and stir for 15 minutes, until the onions are as soft as you like.
OR
Slice the onion as above. Lay out a large piece of aluminum foil. Pour two tablespoons of oil on the foil. Place the onions down, then salt and pepper as above. Make a package out of the foil and cook on a BBQ grill on medium high heat for 30-40 minutes.
Fancy Onions:
Do the same as above, just slice them as thin as you can. Perhaps cook them a bit longer as well.
For spice: Add some chili powder, maybe 1 tsp. the first try, and add more or less depending on how you like the first batch.
Hope this helps. ;o)

The secret to great grilled onions: brule. Slice a couple of onions of your choice. Heat a little oil in a skillet and add the onions, separating the rings as you do. Sprinkle on a little salt.
Don't touch them! Let them cook! In about 10 or 15 minutes you'll notice brown beginning to appear. This is the brule (burnt) that makes them sweet and delicious. NOW turn them! Let them cook another 5 minutes or so. Viola!
The secret is to let them cook WITHOUT tossing them all about. I keep a couple of grilled onions in the refrigerator all the time to spice up burgers, hot dogs, grilled cheese, and a host of other things. Yum yum.

so many questions!!!
okay well i dont know how to make them fancy
peel and then slice the onions
use a skillet or a grill and season the onions with whatever you want ( pepper, salt...etc)
then all you have to do is heat a tiny bit of oil in a skillet and wait til the oil gets hot and then out then into the skillet and flip them over until they are done.
If you are using a grill, then just season the sliced onions and grill them.

I like to fix grilled onions actually on the charcoal grill.
Take a good size Videlia onion, cut ends, peel then cut into 1/4ths, not going thru all the way to the bottom. Place a few pats of butter into the sections along with a clove of garlic minced, then drizzle with worchester sauce, soy sauce or red wine. Wrap in foil, then place on grill for about 20 minutes, turning a few times with tongs.......Goes great with grilled steaks or pork tenderloin.

Its all in the onions you pick my friend
yellow onions are pungent and very nice in stews and
Italian cooking but not too good grilled, red onions are very good on subs and hamburgers or chopped up in omelets and the like.If you want grilled onions to stand out and slap you in the face and say HAY I been here where you been all my life? then you my friend want grilled sweet onions. Vadalia onions or Maui onions grilled with a little olive oil sea salt and cowboy charcoal and served over a huge hunk of meat with mushrooms and peppers.and Swiss cheese slowly oozing over all. Now that's heaven. Or at least as close as I will ever get.Get your grill hot and slice your sweet onions thick and let them sizzle awhile till Good marks are on either side and then let them mingle over in the southwest corner of the grill just shy of the flaming hunk of pure Angus beef that's being burned mercilessly in the flame of a sweet savory mesquite infused cowboy charcoal. washed down with cowboy refreshments the moment is entirely the reason we ride. Good luck hombre. Beef its whats fer dinner!

Slice them nice and thin, and add 1/2 tsp. of salt per 2 cups of onions. Toss lightly over low heat until onion limp and translucent, then keep tossing them until they get all lovely and golden. The salting is a technique called "sweating" and brings out the sweetest taste in the vegetable of choice. If you like it spicy, try a tiny pinch of red pepper flakes while cooking. The heat will increase during cooking, yet develop a tiny trace of sweet with the heat.

One of my favorite ways is to use pearl onions and grill them on skewers.
I will get as many pearl onions as I need and boil them for a couple of minutes. cut off one end and squeeze the onion out of its skin. thread the onions on skewers and put them one the grill, rotating every couple of minutes, until golden brown. They usually come out sweet and delicious.
