The Marines are light infantry with their own air support (fixed and rotary). Their units are designed to be modular so they can be scaled up or down to do a range of jobs. There are always Marine units at sea, ready to respond anywhere in the world on very short notice and have about a month of self-sustainment capabilities. That said, since they are small, there are limits to what they can do. Their air capabilities are mainly geared toward close-air support. If you need to put a lot of bombs on a target or need a lot of heavy forces to stop large forces, you need the Air Force or the Army. But they Marines have a lot of great traditions and are very proud of their very high standards. And because they are light, they move fast, hit hard and move on to their next objective, something that is important in warfare and difficult for heavy forces to do. Theser are some of the reasons why they are so highly thought of!

I served in the U.S. Navy and U.S. Army in that order. If you mean to say "better" in terms of "tougher", "braver", "badder", mentally and physically able to win over an enemy than the Army, then I disagree. The Marines have the edge in training and discipline. Every Marine is a Rifleman, a "Grunt", a Combat Soldier first in theory and in practice, regardless of specialty. Therefore a cook in the Marines is more of a Combat Soldier than a cook in the Army. The Army's Rifleman, "Grunt", Combat Soldier, is the Infantryman. In that regard, one is not better than the other.
However, keep in mind that war is not won or victory achieved by a single group alone. It is won by the combined troops of all the Armed Forces. Each branch of the Armed Forces has its contribution to fight and defeat an enemy. All are important and work as a Team. It is not good and not true to say or foster the idea that one is better than the other or better than the rest. In the final analysis, it is the individual, not the uniform, that is better than the other.
There are differences in Marines and Army traditions and culture, training, discipline. Major differences or not? Probably not. Training, missions, tactics, have differences and similarities. In a nutshell, from my perspective, one is not better than the other. This is my humble answer.

No Marine's are not tougher, stronger, faster...
They are trained to be the first in, and last out. Which is what they do, and very do it very well at that.
Ask someone who is joining the corps as a 0300 why they decided to join, you will most likely here "To be a killer"
or "To be a Marine"
Then ask someone who is joining the Army, why they decided to join. You will most likely hear "to serve my country"
or "for college benefits" or for "For A Career, because there are more oppurtunitys in the Army".
The downgrading you hear about the other forces comes from the different type of recruits each branch gets. You will rarely hear such negative words for a veteran who has served a tour somewhere.
You have the Marine recruits who are joining to kill, or to simply just be a Marine.
& the Army recruits who are joining for the benefits and hoping to better there lifes when they get out in the civilan world.
.
The only major difference is the uniform's they wear.
Both are good at what they do, and each branch has 100% of my respect.
Ask any Marine who has served a tour in a combat situation what he thinks of the Army.
I can almost gaurentee you it wouldnt be degrading like you've heard before from some wanna be Rambo, dont listen to peoples opinions or thoughts about the military if they have not served a tour in Iraq etc..
because they are idiots and dont know what they are talking about.

Marines are trained for missions that call for invading and taking objectives. The Army trains for this purpose, plus to sustain a presence where it is needed. Hence, the shorter tours of duty for Marines in a war zone and longer tours of duty for most Army units. From my own observations, the Marines were not as tolerant of disciplinary problems as the Army was. (I was US Army for 23 years)
