This is not an ethical issue - it is a question of professional behavior. It is never acceptable to yell at another person. I had a boss who was notorious for screaming -- she tried it ONCE with me and I looked her eye and said in a deadly, quiet tone: "I do not allow anyone to raise her voice at me. If you have something to say I will gladly listen, but you must speak to me in a civil tone." I recognize that I took the risk of getting fired but do you know what? She never shouted at me again, even though she continued to do it to other employees who permitted it. Sometimes you just have to draw the line on people like that. Good luck!

ethical implies there is some sort of serious delimma associated with the ethics of a right or wrong decision.

This however, is NOT PROFESSIONAL. "Yelling" at an employee is uncooth and shows the "boss" does not have control over their facilities or does not deserve the role of being in a managerial position over the other employee. "Yelling" at another employee, is humiliating and in front of other employees is demoralizing and can lead to a harassment suit against the "boss" or the company for hostile work environment and a substantial amount of money may be rewarded as the legal proceedings continue.

The best course of action is to remain absolutly emotionless when dealing with any employee. Management does not mean tyranny or dictorialships. That's the main reason why Trade skills unionized together at the turn of the century.

Depends on the job and the mistake.

If he's a zookeeper and his mistake was to accidentally leave the door open to the lion cage, and said lion is charging at his back, I'd say it's perfectly ethical to yell at him.

Otherwise, it's pretty uncool and unprofessional to discipline an employee in front of others.

My boss did the same thing to me. I was an apprentice plumber, and quite new to the game. I made some mistakes. I admit that. But he waited until the entire office was present before he yelled at me and another co-worker. Calling us stupid and other not so savory names. No, it's not ethical! Not only are you in trouble for making a mistake, which is bad enough, but then you have to be humiliated in front of everybody else!? Bull.

No and No...yelling is never "professional" and even reprimanding an employee in front of other employees or customers is a show of disrespect. The basic rule is this, compliment in public, reprimand in private.

NO! You always pull someone aside, and tell them in private. Some employers do that--and some employers lose a lot of valuable people that way. Sometimes you need to talk to someone about a mistake they're making, but you never yell. I'm sorry if this happened to you, and if you did it, well, you need to apologize in front of your staff and be graceful.

Nope ... it shows how immature, and unreasonable, the employer is. Once he loses control, he loses the respect of other employees ... and he's definitely lost the respect of the employee being yelled at.

It's also not nice; in fact, nasty comes to mind ... everyone has feelings.

It is never appropriate to YELL at an employee. Nor is it acceptable to reprimand them in front of others. When I was a manager I used the motto "reprimand in private, praise in public".

Please please please do not YELL at your empolyees in front of other poeple as it is demeaning and emabarssing for yourself and other people around you. SPEAK to that person in private or put them onto some other job that they and yourself will be more satisfied with. I had a boss YELL at an employee in front of customers and guess what ? we had the worse lunch trade ever that day, hmmm I wonder why ?. Best of luck I hope that you can fix your problem.

Its very unprofessional and reflects badly on your management skills, unless you are a drill sergeant.

For the record, if I had a boss that did that, I'd quit.
