It is worse than what you can imagine. The tremendous velocity of the jet blast, combined with extremely high temperatures and carrying with it burnt/unburnt fuel can be as lethal as anything else. You will get burnt, blown away and traumatised all at the same time. In the air, the jet turbulence is also detrimental to aircraft unfortunate enough to encounter it. Many have lost control of their aircraft. When you see formation aerobatics, the aircraft in trail position avoid just one thing - the jet wash; otherwise they blindly follow the leader.

Once we were taxing behind an A320. We kept our distance, we were a good 60feet away since the taxi way was not crowded. I guess the captain wanted a knot or two to turn and hold short so he advanced the throttles. Good thing my instructor stepped on the brakes because we started vibrating as hell.

Some airports have Blast pads. These are marked by yellow arrows and help dissipate jet blast.

tell you what, stand directly behind any jet that is running the engines up for take off, and let us know just how bad the jet blast is. many military aircraft have stalled in flight when flying through the jet wash of another jet. it is also bad to be standing in front of a jet when the engines are being run up and you can be sucked into the jet intake. and that would definately ruin your day.

It can be nasty... take a look at St. Marteen Island when a 747 is doing its run-up... now think of being even closer... its not pretty... Not to mention the unburned fuel that you can inhale if you stand in the blast...

Yes, it is. It can blow over vehicles. I've seen it knock down a blast fence. I work at an airport. Check out the link.
