You only need a 35 or higher on the ASVAB to get into the military and at least a 2.5 GPA. But depending on how well you scored in the different areas will determine what jobs you can qualify for. Tech jobs require a high score in in Technical Aptitude and Math skills. The SEALS are a very highly trained group and physical requirements are a must but just as important are the mental attributes and having a skill that benefit the group. MPs would be a good place to start, not saying that being an MP doesn't require mental attributes. Take the ASVAB and talk with a recruiter/ couselor and they should be able to direct you to a field that is suitable for your qualities. Good luck.

See the recruiter, go down to main center and take the ASVAB test. measures aptitudes.

Maybe find out how you can improve those Math scores, basics like money handling and balancing your checking account to budget your funds and save money. Local colleges or centers will have right classes for you. Are you seeing the numbers correctly? Get diagnosed, lots of help by States' programs.

You want to be welder (HT) which used to do the backed up plumbing problems too. Underwater dive techs do underwater welding, besides combat stuff.

Without a "rating", you go in as Boatswain Mate, prepared for all the mopping, cleaning, chipping rust, painting everyday. Running the small boats when not next to docks, pulling the cable ropes up to piers.

In Boot Camp, you go to swim QUALIFICATIONS, and swim forever and a day to get SEAL / Diver training.

A good rating (technical job) is best to know to fall back on for a career.

Take the Test ! Navy has educational books to help weak areas too.

Average will do unless you want to get into specialized electronics schools or avaition schools. Those are what you need to shot for. Not much call for flippers in the ouside world unless you want to work on an off shore drilling rig as a diver.

Your best bet is to try to shot for some kind of school like avaition mechanic, or, electronics, or something like that.

And barring that shot for the Navy Sea Bees. There you will get training in construction trades something you can use when you get out.

Sounds to me you have already made up your mind. lol!

As for needing people, the armed forces are always in need of people which is why recruiters have quotas to meet to not only cover those whom have retired (or are about to), to replace losses in combat (fatalities and wounded), and to generally grow in total strength (numbers).

As for units such as the S.E.A.L.S. (US Navy), Force Recon (USMC), Special Forces (US Army), Para-Rescue (USAF), etc., many have tried and failed whom where in, or beyond peak physical condition. These units are extremely discriminatory and will boot a candidate for the smallest detail.

My suggestion is to look into the different fields each branch offers specialized training in. Taking the ASVAP is the best way to find out what field you are more likely to excel in and pursue it after you graduate from Basic Training.

You may not enjoy the particular field, but some of the initial things that these Special units really look hard at in their Candidates (prior to Selection or Denial) is your specialty and how well you perform, and excel in that MOS and if they need you and your skills.

I wish you the best of luck...

You actually need a 36 to join the Air Force, and its a bit higher to qualify for the kind of jobs you're talking about. Talk to a recruiter. They all have a practice test in the office which will give you an idea of what you will score.

the Navy and Air Force especially need people who can learn and retain the knowledge. it is a VERY high Tech military, even for the grunts. so yes, a strong Math background would be necessary for most jobs.

All you can do is take the ASVAB to see what you qualify for.

You don't have to be smart to join the navy or airforce, its mainly about physical things and determination

First, Reconsider any military service. If you want adventure or excitement, try the peace corps, or take-up an extreme sport.

I personally believe that U.S. Americans can join any branch of the military, regardless of smarts. It's the warm body that counts. That body can be used for many games.
