Yep, we from the midwest tend to say "pop," while it seems like just about everyone else calls it either "soda" or "soda pop." We're weirdos -- get used to it.

In WI some people call it pop and some call it soda...A lot of people I know as well as myself call it soda. I think it all depends on where you grew up etc. As for the bubbler-water fountain thing...same thing with soda some people call it bubbler, some call it water fountain..when I think of a water fountain..I think of something in a pond that shoots water up. I don't think you can say whether or not an entire state says it one way or the other because everyone is different. (like the person above me from WI, he says everyone calls it pop, and I don't really know many people who say pop...maybe a seldom few)

I can't help "solve" this mystery, because I've lived in Michigan, most of my life, but I do say soda occasionally because I spent every summer of my life in the south... I think it's just a north south thing.. My cousins call everything coke, orange coke, sprite coke, etc... I don't get it either.. but.... your in Michigan now... it's pop!

In the 40s and 50s it was called soda pop. I had the opposite problem, we called it POP in the midwest and when I moved to the east coast it was SODA.

Just a regional thing. I'm from Rhode Island where we say soda, but when I lived in New Hampshire they called it "tonic."
As long as you know what you want, who cares?
By the way, we have an ice cream drink that you probably would call a milk shake or a frappe. We call it a "cabinet." Try asking for THAT in a different area.

Washing soda comes in a yellow box.
Baking soda comes in a yellow box.
Pop comes in a bottle or a can.

Perhaps the problem is the Texas educational system. I'm told that both LBJ and Dubya were taught at a young age that the Alamo was a great military battle.

Yup, im from Texas as well. We call everything soda here. Orange soda, grape soda. But I'm a DP man myself...DP is Dr. Pepper for all those people in the north that don't have it. I think they have something called, um... Mr. Pibb... I think. I have never heard anyone really call it cola, but I have heard CokeCola, all one word.

I was in Houston one time and was out with some friends and I ordered a "pop", and they just couldn't stop laughing at me. That was when I found out they call it "soda" down South. We, in the North, call it "pop". It's just a regional thing...Georgia people call everything "coco-cola" because Georgia is headquarters for Coca Cola company.
