I can't give you a percentage but having worked for a very large department for 30 years I can honestly say very few used race for their profiling. Criminal or trouble maker profiling and a lot of other profiles, yes. All good cops should, for example, tell a bi-polar who is in manic stage just be observing a few seconds, same with a schizo. A good cop can pick out the real leader of an about to riot crowd. All by using their experience to profile.
Back in the late 60's I was stopped by the police at least 3 times a week. Why? I matched the profile of either a trouble maker or a drug user.
I was white, obviously middle class and they would see me driving around and around in an all black very rough area. They did not know that I lived there and was usually looking for parking, it was a very crowded area. In most cases my car was searched.

Racial profile: The list of characteristics that identify a given race.

Cops NEVER engage in racial profiling. There are some racist cops, but not as many as the media likes to portray.

Criminal Profile: The list of characteristics that identify criminal behavior. That is the definition of a cops job. Like it or not, race is a factor in what behavior is suspicious.

This question is embraced by many things to much to start to list, but does profiling exist yes it does, but all races can be including depending on where you live, I am from Detroit area, trust me, I have seen and heard all types of B S! A percentage is unknown a good laugh times sure, its all a crock some of these Police Officers need a tune-up, attitude adjusment or whatever else it takes.

First tell me what profiling is. Everybody complains about it but no one can describe it. I have had people complain to me that I profiled them and then in the same breath ask me if I think they look like a terrorist. I don't know is there some kind of profile I am supposed to use for terrorists? I ask them what a terrorist looks like. EVERY single time they tell me a middle eastern male. I guess it is true that hypocrisy knows no bounds.

Here is how it works, plain and simple. Cops look for things that do not belong, things that seem out of the ordinary. These things are a variety of factors and race is the least important of those factors. I look for people who don't want to make eye contact with me, or even people who are trying too hard to make eye contact with me. I look for people who seem nervous or don't look like they have any reason to be where they are, etc...

If I have questions I stop and ask the person. Am I right all of the time? No, of course not. People who answer questions in a truthful and reliable manner are released promptly and thanked for their time. Others are inspected more closely.

For all of you who decry this, I guarantee you that if you spent one day with me you would employ the same tactics of sorting out who to talk to.

Well you have to ask yourself what percentage of cops are one race. Cops are made up of all ethnic groups so to ask such a question is moronic. Why would a black cop be racial profiling against blacks? Why would a latino cop be racial profiling against latinos, etc.? Is your statement trying to say that most cops are white and against minority races? I no longer consider whites a minority in America, we are a melting pot all shuffled around.

All of them. They just need to make sure they stop 2 white guys the same night they stop "the others". They send the Chicano cops into the Barrios to alleviate the accusations. I lived in North Highlands where it was pretty hard to find a white guy in the streets at 2 A.M. Not too many in the Compton area either at that hour . So much for the facts of life. My advice to you, muchacho, is to get that La Raza mind set out of your head. When you get a little older and maybe buy some property, when you see somebody jumping over your fence with your VCR, remember me when you tell the cops.."It was a black/brown guy"..

Racial profiling does not work. Criminal profiling does.

Its not the race of the driver/passengers, its the car, BEHAVIOR, clothing, time of day, LOCATION, etc...

Its not my fault if dumb *** kids and others folks want to emulate "gangstas" and the scumbags that really are out there perpetrating the crimes.

If you dress like a thug and act like a thug and you're going to get treated like a thug. Its simple.

Be honest, what percentage of criminals (however broadly defined) fit a certain profile?

Don't young college kids drink and drive?
Don't middle eastern men drive airplanes into buildings?

Those of us who are any good at what we do use various forms of profiling, including race, M.O., opportunity and proximity. It's not bigotry, it's using that organ between your ears.
