A quality paint job may cost between $1,500 and $2,500 dollars, depending upon the prep work necessary. There are cheaper options, but "you get what you pay for" (as they say, ungrammatically!). Good luck!

Actually the 1978 280 Z has 5 mile an hour front bumpers and rear bumper. As safe as any 34 year old car. Car looks much more like the Fairlady with the bumpers removed. Side impact in a low car if a Ford F-350 with ranch hand front bumper hits you you could get hurt. A properly modified 2.8 liter I-6 (L-28) can make plenty of power. 4 point seat belts are a great idea. That Z is easy to repair and fun to work on good luck.

The key is the body prep, if you skimp on prep the money you spend on paint will be wasted. I doubt a $200 paint job will last 5 years. I would expect to spend $1500 minimum for a basic "factory color" paint job, more if there is rust repair. It may seemlike a lot of effort, but inadequate prep can cause the new paint to peel off, especially around the typically "neglected areas" inside the door openings.

Expect to spend $3,000 and replace all the rubber around the windows and doors and rear hatch. That high price also includes rust repair behind the ft wheels and low under the rear bumper as well as the rust poking thru the rear hatch and around the rear window. And that annoying rust when you open the rear hatch where it latches and sides. My 1978 was a Texas car so the only rusted area was where there was poor quality body repair 20 years ago right side front hood hinge. No extra points given for original color get what you want. Porsche Guards red!

Well a factory paint job in 1978 wasn't very good. If you really want a nice job, spend about $2K on a good base clear paint job. Maaco can do a factory paint job for $200. but it will suk just like it did back in '78
