I asked why God allows Satan to be powerful. You said "free will, honey, free will." So, then, what you're saying is, without some red-horned guy running around trying to trick us all into becoming atheists, we wouldn't have free will at all?

Free will = choices. You can choose whether you want to do good or bad. And Satan is not a red horned guy, but a very beautiful angel that went bad. The Catholic church made him into a horned monster to strike fear into the hearts of the common folk.

I think that people asociate satan with free will..because I imagine that running around drinking, *******,fighting, and abandoning all your responsibilities is a prominent sybol fo freedom. But do they not realise that- that is also a way of being enslaved? To be a slave to your compulsions? To be a slave to the devil? and to all the negative consequences that follow after that 'freedom' or abandonment of morals? Personally I would rather live a life of some composure and happieness...even if it requires more submittance and obvious work on my part.....If we all did whatever we wanted the world would be chaos-anarchy.....It is better to refrain from excessive drugs and sex...for that is how most live....who would you rather be- the 'free' soul who acted irrationally-freely; out of house and home or the person who carried out responsibillities and lives in a house and has enough money to live contently?
sorry everybody..that was a bit of a rant.. :(

I'm just entering the conversation, but I don't believe in satan. The role of satan in the book of Job, which is a short story, not historical figure, is as an entity who seems to test people on behalf of God. Free will simply means that we are free to act on our own, and God is not going to compel creation to worship Him.

No, that is not it. Satan was an angel who rebelled against God because he wanted more power than he had been given.
God did not take that power away from Satan.
Satan had power to begin with, as an angel.
I don't think Satan is trying to trick us into becoming atheists. he is trying to attack and accuse us so that we doubt ourselves and totally go against God and do immoral things.
Atheists are not immoral. They are good people.

free will is about how your intelect and virtues are built i smoke and drink is that the devil. no the trick is to not kill others and live well as long as you have a good understanding and moral concious there is nothing to the devil pulling you in one direction or another he is a non object the trick is to understand what exactly is rigth or wrong not fashionably correct but actually correct understand the sins you live and do as part of life are understood by god he knows it is hard down here the devil will only prevail in the situation you allow him to

Satan is powerful because men have given him power through their own sin and rebellion.
Satan once had complete sway over my life, and although I thought I was free, the truth was that I was a slave to sin.
The main power Satan holds over mankind is the power of guilt.
Men are sinners and know it, so they feel they have no power with God; no reason to have their prayers answered.
God justified us through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ for our sins so we could have confident access to God and expect to have our prayers answered, being at peace with God.
Jesus Christ sets us free to do the will of God.
If we willfully choose to go on sinning, we will become slaves to whatever we submit ourselves to.

God gave us free will. That's why Adam and Eve listened to the Serpent in the Garden of Eden.

without Satan around Adam had free will to eat of the tree or not to eat. He chose to eat and that's why we are in the shape we are in. Adam had free will without Satan influences.

Fact is, old bible-monster needs an adversary. Otherwise, he would look even worse than he does now. From a historic/human perspective, it's the old duality trap; black and white thinking. Day and Night, Good and Evil, and to hell with nuances. Primitive.

that is because Christians are stupid.
Sweet cakes, the reason the devil is powerful is because god is evil and the devil is the good god.
I mean like, com on!
god kills kids and men and women.
who does the devil kill?
nobody.
So see, the devil is the good guy.
Look how smart I am, I'm an atheist and I am 10 times smarter than your dumbest christian.
