Whether or not it's legal, it's utterly stupid and irresponsible on multiple levels.

Yes but it takes a permit to keep wild animals. In fact I think that is more federal than state. I know in Texas you are supposed to have a permit if you keep wild animals deemed dangerous.
Best thing is to leave them alone and if you live where you have them around your house keep a pistol and when they get too close fire a warning shot. The average cougar or panther can easily jump close to thirty feet when they pounce.

They cost a ton of money to feed, they need a lot of exercise, and they are not a domestic animal. A panther wouldn't be happy living in a house. If you can't make an animal happy, why keep it? I'd personally love to have any of the big cats, but it's just not the thing to do.

It's not necessarily state law that says it's illegal, there are many cities who have local ordinances on the books against exotic animals. Nearly ALL cities say no 'livestock' inside city limits (it's a sanitation issue), and most of them have had to look at the question of exotics like monkeys, tortoises, prairie dogs, etc.

A call to your City Clerk will clear it up for you as to your area.

No its illegal to have a wild animal like that as a pet... They belong in the wild... Also I bet it would be costly feeding and taking care of it. Not to mention what it would do to the sofa!

Probably not but if you could it would change from state to state. I think it is cruel though to keep an animal that big and beautiful in a cage. I'm glad your just curious

you local dnr will tell you if you can have one some states require a permit to have a wild animal and they have requirements on size of cage and will come and inspect it to see if it is excape proof and remember they are still wild you might think that they are loving animals and the next thing you are lunch

Hell yeah it is illegal and it sure will not be cute if we were watching the news one day and they are showing us a picture of "Panther ate owner".

to own a panther you must have a USDA permit, very hard to get.
