I recently bought an 8 month old Basset Puppy from a breeder. She's been eating IAMS Puppy, but she has allergies to it and is a tad skinny (33 lbs). So, I've been switching her to Canidae Life Stages slowly this week (just a small bit in her food and sometimes as a treat).

Yesterday, she stopped eating the IAMS and only wants the Canidae. She only eats the IAMS if I mix it really well and today she refused to eat at all any of the IAMS until she was starved late in the day (by then I caved and put in more Canidae). The breeder said she eats 3 cups of IAMS a day.I feed her in three meals to prevent bloat.

So, my question is tomorrow I'm going to get a larger bag of Canidae (it's an hour drive, but worth it!). I want to know how much she should be eating. Also, if I add in some canned Canidae daily how would that effect feeding amounts.

My other question -- since she only wants the Canidae can I stop the slow introduction and just switch? It's only been about 4 days.

BTW, this isn't my first basset. Our 14 year old basset just died of cancer two weeks ago. However, she was on Hills Prescription Diet and I did a lot of research before I chose Canidae. The dogs are like people in our house so I'm willing to drive to get the best. Just want to be sure we do the right thing.

If she just wants the Canidae, and she's not having serious stomach upsets, then just switch. Bassets generally have cast-iron stomachs.

As for how much she should eat, that depends on the food, her energy level, how big she will eventually get etc. Start with the directions on the bag and if she's still skinnny give her more, if she's getting too fat, give her less.

In a little while (usually around 10 months or so), her growth will slow down and she'll naturally start eating less and maybe refusing a meal. DON'T WORRY, she will eat what she needs to.

She is an old enough puppy and big enough dog that even if it upsets her digestion a little, it will only be a day or so and not enough to make her actually sick. Go ahead and feed her the Canidae. It is a much better and healthy food for her. It has been far too many years since I raised Bassets to remember the amount of food but she is still a growing puppy and I would feed her at least three times a day and I would probably increase the amount she is getting. At least until she is about 2 and starting to mature and fill out.

Congrats on the switch to Canidae. Yes you can stop the slow introduction and just make the switch.

Also Canidae is very calorie dense and a much better quality of food then IAMS..you won't have to feed her as much. My Danes only get 4 cups of Canidae per day..two cups per feeding..am/pm. If you only add a spoonful or two of the canned Canidae it won't effect the amount fed, however if you add more you will need to reduce the amount of dry fed.
I feed the canned as well as dry to my Danes.

Just switch since she likes it and doesn't like the Iams. Also, canned dog food often causes diarrhea in dogs so I would just stick with dry puppy food. Also, good choice switching to Canidae, it's has much more nutrients than Iams.

Puppies up to 6 months old may be fed 3 to 4 times daily. Puppies six months to a year may be fed twice daily.
Feed Pregnant Dogs up to 50% more during the last 3 weeks of pregnancy. Nursing mothers require twice the amount of food as suggested in the daily guidelines and may be fed 3 to 4 times a day.
The above Daily Feeding Guidelines are a good starting point on the amount of food suggested to be fed on a daily basis. If you feed more than once per day, simply divide the Daily Feeding Guidelines by the amount of times fed per day.

I would just go ahead and swtich. There may be feeding recommendations on the back of the dog food bag. I would continue to feed her the same amount that you have been.
