Okay, so I have been really close to this one professor and I guess you can say I had a crush on him...But he helped me out so much, he was the one that changed my life, opened my eyes, etc. So when I was done with school, I asked him for a hug and he said he couldn't because of "policy". Now, So many of my profs gave me hugs because it was my last term here, and then the one that I was crushing on tells me "no because of policy"? Do you think it was because he knew I had a crush on him???Thanks

Maybe it was HIS policy. (Or his wife's.)

The profs who hugged you could overlook policy because there was no romantic undercurrent. The one you really wanted couldn't hug you because he didn't want there to be any possible misunderstanding between you. The ethical proscriptions barring romantic involvement between a professor and a student are taken so seriously among the faculty that even a hint of something like that could get him in trouble. It's just as well. You two are in completely different places in your lives.

No, just some teachers really follow the rules, and some don't. There probably is some policy in place about hugging the students, or maybe he liked you too and can't get involved with you because you are his student. If I were you I'd cut my losses and move on. Getting involved with a professor can only mean trouble.

There may be a policy in place to protect both students and teachers that restricts physical contact. Just because others may choose to ignore it doesn't mean he is. It is possible that he knew you had a crush on him, but I am sure his refusal had to do with an actual school rule rather than any knowledge he may or may not have had.

In the past he may have gave someone a hug who took it the wrong way and reported it to his supervisor, so in order to keep from getting into trouble he uses the term policy to ensure students do not go beyond the limits and get him into trouble.

Maybe he just isn't touchy. Also, maybe he was anxious...there are a lot of stories now about teachers sexually harassing their students or students reporting (and exaggerating) sexual harassment cases and many professors make it a policy (their own, if not the school's) not to come into any sort of physical contact with their students whatsoever.

It's a bit hard to disguise the fact that you have a crush on someone.
He probably suspects the way you feel and used that 'policy' thing to avoid the physical contact.
And he was right to.

Probably not. Some professors have their own policies about not touching students.

There is such a rule where you are not supposed to show any affection (including hugging) towards a student.

most likely yes, and it was an easy cop out b/c he probably didn't like you. so to let you down easy and for you NOT to get the wrong impression he used school policy as an out.
