This is an foreign exchange student from Japan in my Focus Group class. We just sit there for 25 minutes doing nothing. Well anyways. She knows English, but I don't think she is so comfortable speaking it yet. So I think if I greet her in a traditional Japanese way she may get comfortable enough to talk some more. I was born in America and no English excellently but maybe if she sees and Arab speaking English she won't mind talking more.

So how do Japans teens great each other? I want to know how to say,

Hello, my name is ....
How are you?
And then say something else that may be another cool greeting.

I always had a thing for Eastern Asian girls so please don't screw this up for me.

Hello, "Konnichiwa (con-ee-chi-wa"
My name is___"Watashi no namae wa____ (wa-tah-she-no na-ma ay-wa)"
How are you? "Genki desuka? (gang-ki- des-u-kaa)"

Most Japanese are really shy.

Hehe.. honestly, all you have to do is speak to her in English. Ask her about herself and what she likes, and she'll be friendly. All Japanese start learning English from junior high school, so she probably understands English, but she may not speak English all that well, and she probably doesn't have a whole lot of confidence in it, either. So, speak slowly and clearly to her, be sincere, and hopefully things will go well.

You could try speaking Japanese to her, but she'll be more impressed with you if you just talk to her honestly. If you want to learn Japanese, ask her to teach you a little.

By the way, Smile, "choushi ha dou?" is like asking someone who has recently been sick/is sick how they are feeling. It's like asking, "How's your body condition?" Definately not a good way to start a conversation with someone you don't know!

FYI:

'Konnichiwa' means 'good afternoon', so use it in the afternoon (12 pm ~ 6ish).
